The Sydney Subbies must be praised for their initiative to stop mugs on and off the field abusing referees. They made a ruling this week that competition points would be taken off teams if they were found guilty of giving a referee a hard time. This also includes spectators who take delight in venting their spleen at the whistleblowers. Premiership and club points will be docked. Other competitions should follow suit.

Congratulations to Lani Kaiwai on being selected for the NSW Subbies Rep Team.
Not since 2006 Dean Thomson U19’s and not since 2003 Billy Rainima have Hunters Hill had a senior player selected in the Subbies Rep team. Lani will most likely line up against another Hunters Hill boy Tim Walton on the wing for NSW Country Cockatoos this Sat 5pm kick off in a curtain raiser to the Waratahs v Lions S15 match. Lani becomes the 72nd Hunters Hill player to represent NSW Sub District Rugby Union, the first of which were W Weir and W Howard 100 years ago in 1911.
Lani is one of only two, Division 2 players in the starting 15, which has 8 Div 1 players and 1 Div 3 players and 4 from the Div 4 Brothers club.
Well done Hayden Brown aka Staedler aka Houdini aka Family Guy for gaining 100 games for Hunters Hill and gained the milestone against Forest. Brownie has often been the unmovable rock and that's just at the bar.
Tom Kellaway (Tumbles) who is known by many in the junior club as our coaching assistance resource was last week selected to captain Hunters Hill Seniors first grade against Oatley. Tom was one of the first registrations when the junior club reformed in 1997 and the first junior from the new era to go on to obtain this honour. As it is planned we hope to see many Hunters Hill boys who played junior footy go on to play senior football with the club.
Tom is also currently doing a tremendous job coaching junior's 12A team who have taken the competition by storm this year, undefeated and putting last year’s runners up Manly well and truly to the sword in last Friday nights big game at Boronia. Tom was an inaugural member of the ARU Junior Coaching development team and a fantastic coaching resource available to all our coaches. Junior coaches wishing to inquire about Tom assistance can do so through age coordinators and the club cannot recommend highly enough Toms coaching skills and input. Minis coaches particularly, Tom can show you how to run a session that can change the way you run your sessions.
Not to be outdone was Jules Arndt (Uncle) who also brought up 100 games at Newport or after Newport. Not to be outdone except for the number of games, where Jules had 100 and Kate had 200. However as the photo can attest, he's not afraid to show what he's made of. In this case the red stuff.
Congratulations to Richard Colley (Kate Moss) who entered the 200 game club.
He actually achieved the mark against Newport before easter. Or against Hornsby before Newport.
There is a new game day photos blog spot. This now replaces the old spot, as we couldn't remember the password.

On behalf of the Briars Club I would like to thank the administration, canteen, ground staff and players of Hunters Hill for all their efforts in getting the games played last Saturday. I know the amount of work that goes into the last minute changes and organisation that finished up turning out a very good and competitive day. In the true spirit of rugby the co-operation between the two clubs, council and referees made it possible for over 150 players to have a game and some very good footy was played. Unfortunately, the day was originally Briars Ladies Day and a big night with band had been organised back at our club and could not be cancelled so we all had to get back there and could not come to join with Hunters for a enjoyable beer or two. I am sure we will catch up for one next round.
With Gratitude

Hunters Hill Rugby celebrated winning the Suburban Rugby Club of the Year on Friday night. Hillies not only won the Club of the Year in Division 3, but then went on to win the overall NSW Suburban Rugby Club of the Year.
'It is an amazing effort for a Division three side to win the Overall Club of the Year', Suburban Rugby Competition Manager Tim Richards stated after the presentation, ' Although Hunters Hill have had a very successful year on the field, it's the club's administration, organization and behavior off the field which has made them stand out amongst the 56 clubs in Suburban Rugby.'
Even on holiday, President Rod Salmon heard the news and was delighted, saying " The club has achieved beyond it expectations this year and sets a solid base for our new season- the award has highlighted that the whole club has had a fantastic year"
Hunters Hill will be competing in Division 2 rugby next year, aiming for an equally successful season.
2009 has turned out to be a huge year for Hunters Hill Rugby, with six Junior teams claiming Grand Premier trophies on Sunday. Wins for the 11Bs against Land Cove, 11Ds and 12Ds against K.W.P and the 13Cs against Roseville, along with shared trophies between the 11As and Manly, and the 12Bs and Forestville due to nail biting draws in the finals have added to the success on the pitch at Boronia Park this season. Two other teams competed in the finals, the 10Cs unlucky to go down 24-21 against Roseville and the 15Cs unfortunate in a hard fought 17-12 loss against Wahroonga.
14 Junior Hillies sides made it to the semi-finals, with 8 making it through to the grand Finals at Sydney Academy of Sport at Narrabeen.

The combined Hunters Hill Rugby Clubs (Juniors, Seniors and Golden Oldies) come together this year to raise money for the Giant Steps school for autistic children at Gladesville. The Black and White Ball held in the middle of the year was a specific fund-raiser for Giant Steps. Also the reunion earlier in the year contributed to the Giant Steps fundraising.
The final outcome being that $10,200 has been donated to Giant Steps though this year. The donated money is being used by the school for their 'Ball Pit Project' (a foam lined play area for the children). The construction of the ball pit is work in progress and an update will come out when it is completed. Letter

A little good news from the other side of the pond in LA. As many of you know Sunjay has been going through the arduous selection process to become one of the 'So' California All Stars rugby players. A few members of each team were selected to try out for the All Stars. He’s been through 2 long and hot 3 hour physical and rugby sessions with around 40 other guys to try out in front of a selection panel of 4 judges. The sessions are being run by a Doctor here who is grueling and has them sprinting and doing medicine ball stuff for hours in the 42 degree heat in the middle of the day. Anyway, the last trials were done on Saturday, the day the selectors were going to make their choice. we're very pleased to announce that out of the 40 contenders, Sunjay has been named a So. California All star, one of the 24 players. Out of those players the selectors then had to choose who were going to be the starting line up players and who they were going to register as reserves, Sunjay was also named in the starting line up. |

Moss of Kukri sports australia has provided the club with a prize jersey
for the player who best exemplifies the spirit of Hillies Rugby.
The prize is awarded on a Monthly basis and the recipient is selected by
our discerning club captain Benny Smith. The award is for the player who
may not score coaches points every week but is deserving of congratulations
for his effort on behalf of the club.
This month's winner is Matt Graham, for his consistent performance on field and his efforts across three Grades (3rd, 2nd and occasionally 1sts)
Well done Matt, keep up the good work. Or else.
Congratulations go to Ben Smith who was voted as Hunters Hill Club Captain. Three candidates moved to the podium at Boronia Park to a scull off to determine the new club captain. But Smithy showed superior skills and knowledge of both the inside and outside of a can to emerge victorious. Shapelle and Tooley were magnanimous in defeat and acknowledged the thirst displayed by Smithy. 'Thirsty is my middle name' exclaimed Smithy. This and other strange rantings probably explain why he wasn't allowed into any of the pubs whilst on tour. As part of Smithy's victory speech he acknowledged the tradition of laying $400 on the bar if and when Hillies bring home a clean sweep against an opposing team. Asked if he had anything further to add, he was reported to say 'uz thair eny more free puss'. |

We are now at the sharp end of the season, I would like to thank all the coaches and assistants who have contributed to making preseason a success and all those who played or assisted with the trials. The teams we played against have all commented on how they enjoyed the hit out against such a well run and sportsmen like group of players. more

We are pleased to announce that we have now signed a sponsorship agreement with the Woolwich Pier Hotel as our hotel sponsor for the 2007 season.
We will be having all of our speeches and functions there this year, including team dinners and drinks and cheap steaks after training. We have negotiated a performance-based deal with them, so it is important that you support your rugby club by supporting our sponsor.
We're all very pleased to have the Pier on board for 2007 as it's a great venue and we believe there are some great nights of 'bonding' ahead of us for 2007.

Congratulations
to Willy Wassell (pictured right) who gained the support of the Hunters
Hill players to be voted Club Captain. He gained the position when voting
was locked between himself and Sunjay Jain. The only way to separate
the two was with a drink off with Willy claiming victory. When asked
to place upturned can on his head the cagey Wassell refused and Sunjay
powered home. A futher drinkoff was called for to decide the outcome
but there were no more beers left due all players chasing the thirst
for power. Willy claimed power first so the result stood.
