Welcome Back

Dave WestonAnd so it begins. We are now a few months into 2010 and the new playing season is fast approaching. Hopefully everybody is feeling fresh and ready to go.

You all should have been receiving the emails containing all the information needed, including key dates, socials and latest news. If not, please email, dweston@redapple.com.au .

Pre-season commenced on the 2nd February, with a great turnout and commitment. So far the training has been going well with a good balance of fitness and skills, run by the variety of different coaches on board for 2010. Four weeks on, the fitness is getting easier, the skills sharper, and with numbers increasing, all is falling into place nicely. Many thanks to all the coaches and committee members who have been getting down to Boronia to open up and getting the drills set up so no time is wasted. Keep coming up, and if you have not or know someone who hasn't, get on them to come to training.

You may have noticed the many signs/banners/newspaper articles and ads, spreading the word on Hillies. A few people to thank here. Shieldsey, Jordan, Macrae, Gak and the Big Fish Salmon have all been helping with the signs and banners. We need to thank Ana for the great artwork used in the ads and on the landing page, as well as for putting up with Chrissy Collins. The TWT and Northern District Times have been running a few articles on our build up to the season and we thank them for the coverage and Jules for the write ups.

Lets keep the momentum going, keep training and take notes of the dates of the trial games below. Get down, signed up, and please start getting those fees paid off, it will help the club run smoother throughout the year. Remember, training Tuesday and Thursdays, get there for 6.45pm for a 7pm start

Trial games

Dave WestonThe trials are a great way for players to gain match fitness and show the coaches what you’re made of. It will help with selection come the start of the season, and get everybody in the right frame of mind. The first couple of trials will vary from 20 to 35 minutes a half depending on the grade, with plenty of breaks for recovery.  You will be given warning by the coaches on which grades you will be trialling in.

The Petersham trial on the 27th March will also be the Bruno Cup, giving us the chance to keep hold of the trophy for another year. It’s a very important day and game for Hunters Hill Rugby , as we get the chance to honor the late great Tony Brunsdon and reflect on everything he did for the club.

FROM JULES

Dave WestonIf a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step, then it seems quite natural that a season of 21 games will start with several hills. Pre-season has well and truly started at Boronia and signs are good, very good.

For those of us who spent the summer eating, there has been a degree of discomfort. However for all those who have made it down so far, the hard part is over and they can look forward to starting the season with ready to play footy as enquiry as to the availability of the club's respirator.

The Tuesday and Thursday sessions have been a high energy mix of conditioning and skills based exercises and the work of Coaches Robinson, Salmon, Shaw, Katoa, Shields, Atkins, French, Turner, Fraser and Colley has been sharp and well directed. The re-appearance of Peter Allen has been a huge highlight, it seems the boy from Oz still calls Boronia home.

The influx of talent at the club is very noticeable and we have seen new players of all categories including blokes returning to rugby after a few years off, young punks straight out of school, total beginners and polished potential First Graders from distant shores. All of this new meat bodes very well for a season in which Hillies must improve and prosper after a stellar 2009.

Wednesday nights have seen a small group of committed athletes being put through their paces by professional GoFitness(tm) personal trainer and try-machine Dan Casa. These strength-based circuit sessions have been excellent and really should be attracting more numbers than they are. Come down for 45 minutes on a Wednesday to push some steel and watch Gak's acrobatics. It is definitely worth it.

In short, if you haven't made it down yet, you need to IMMEDIATELY. The hills get flatter, the runs shorter and the breaks longer with every session you make so get down to Boronia ASAP to begin the journey to fitness. With so many new players, competition for spots will be fierce and the coaches are watching. There are only two more free Saturdays before trials so there is no time to waste.

The time for preparation is now. The place is Boronia.  Tuesday and Thursday @ 7, Wednesday Circuit @ 7.15.
The Hunt Continues
