Beecroft Trials

It's just over two weeks until the new Subbies season begins, and Hunters Hill had their biggest test so far coming up against Division 1 outfit Beecroft. On a hot Saturday afternoon, a big crowd saw just how far Hillies have come in the last 12 months, and they can be proud with the outcome.

The new Colts team started well, going a try up in the opening 20 minutes. With a big squad to rotate, fresh players were introduced as the game went on. Beecroft's experience eventually showed, scoring two tries to make the final score 10-5. Considering this was only their 2nd game together, the youngsters can be proud of their effort.

The 3rd/4th Grades had a good go, but eventually lost, and the U85kg game ended in a scoreless draw.

The 2nd Grade game went Hillies way, with the some hard grafting, to gain a good result.

Hillies 1st Graders seemed to enjoy the challenge of playing a team who had a successful year in the Division above in 2009. Beecroft came out with all guns blazing and were four tries up after twenty minutes. Hillies then came back into the game, slowing the ball down at the break down and using the superior size in the pack. Chances were created, but not capitalized on. One more try from Beecroft still didn't stop Hillies from pushing on, and eventually got some points on the board. Jordan Butler scored in the corner after some good work from Flanker Colman Taylor. Although the scoreboard read 25-5, the boys from Boronia Park can take plenty of positives away from the day.

The coaches made the decision this season to grade the trials as early as possible and it seems to be working, with teams given the opportunity to play together earlier then previous years. Another positive is although there are a number of injuries in the squad at the moment, quality players have stepped in and done a job. With the likes of Marshy, Big Bird, Luke Mc and Sammy all carrying knocks, along with Deano and Matty Mc returning this weekend, we are looking strong.

Training

The times for training have been put back to 7pm this season to assist players in getting there on time after work. Can we please all make sure that we are down the Oval by 6.45pm, boots on, ready to run. It’s hard for the coaches to get drills going with numbers still showing up late for training.
Also, if you can’t make training or are unavailable for a game, can you let your respective coaches know as early as possible. Training sessions are planned in advance and the more the coaches are aware of the numbers the better. When the season starts, you will need to contact the various Grade managers to make them aware of availability. A simple phone call, txt, or email is all that needs to be done.

Trials

Two trials remain. Get up to training and show your face for a run out on Saturday. It’s a big day for the club.
Keep Saturday night free for a few drinks at the HHH’s. Be good to get as many as we can down the pub after the game.

Jules World

This Saturday will see the Hunters Hill Rugby First Grade side seeking to retain the Tony Brunsdon Cup at Boronia No.2 against traditional foes Petersham.

The third installment of the marquee match sees the two clubs seeking to break a 1-1 deadlock, with Petersham comfortable victors in 2008 and Hillies decisive in a 23-6 win in the final round of last year.

Last season's match has already forged its own place in Hillies Rugby folklore, with the club sealing victory through a try to club stalwart and Brunsdon family friend Alex Light in front of a large and rapturous group of supporters. With the Brunsdon Cup and the Club Championship Shield held aloft moments later, it was a day not quickly forgotten by those who were present.

The late great Tony Brunsdon will forever rank among the top performers for Hunters Hill, as a player and as a coach. Some of his achievements include captaining the 1969 Whiddon Cup premiership team; Club Captain from 1973-76; coaching the winning Kentwell Cup side to the record 1977-78-79 victories, along with playing the Judd Cup victory in 1979. Tony was an instrumental figure in the 'Glory Years' of Hunters Hill Rugby.

This Saturday's match, in light of Hunters Hill great success in 2009, will take place under different circumstances. Given their promotion to Division Two of the Suburban competition, Hunters Hill will not play Petersham in the regular season and as such the Tony Brunsdon Cup will be contested in this Saturday's trial match. The 'trial' status stands to mean little to a Hunters Hill side keen to possess the trophy on a permanent basis.

The club is hoping for a big crowd on Saturday as they put their silverware on the line in what will be the first big test in an enormous year in Hunters Hill Rugby.

President's  Column

2010 has started where we left off in our winning 2009 season. During the off-season a lot of work has been done to ensure that the club has another successful year. We welcome new members to the committee being Ron White, Matt Macrae, Dave Weston and Jordan Butler, their enthusiasm and expertise has been great. We are fortunate to have 4 new sponsors this year being The Dental Lounge, Crust Pizza, Vitamin World and Top Brands Warehouse. All our previous sponsors have returned and include, Hunters Hill Hotel, Tasman Tanks, Goodride Tyres, Seymours Building Supplies, Eyeland, and Faraday & Kent

We have a new scrum machine, which is the top of the range machine from Enforcer Rugby generously supplied by an ex Hunters Hill player in Matt Corkhill.

The Colts have been reborn with a vengeance thanks to the recruiting efforts of Mike Kellaway, Paul Shields, Bruce Lycett and Andy Harvey. The first 2 games have shown we will certainly have success this year.

We have a large increase in player numbers already for 2010 and will be fielding 8 teams including 1st through 5th Grade, Under 85's Colts and Under 18's. This is a record for the senior division of the club.

We have done the preparation to step up this year to face the improved opposition teams that Division 2 will bring. The competition for positions in first grade is intense with 26 players having been noted by the coaches as forming the basis of the first grade squad.

Overall we are ready for the challenge of season 2010 and stand counted as the men in Black and White from Hunters Hill ready to take the field and show what we are about.
Good luck Hunters Hill lets work to our strengths and remember our motto "Facta non Verba"

Rod Salmon
Seniors President.

Overall Signed
Dave 'Wild' Weston
