Bruno Cup
What a great day it was on Saturday. The numbers we had available for a trial was great and the fact we could field 4 grades and a colts side as well, goes to show all the hard work in pre-season seems to be paying off.
4th Grade had the early kick off and set us on our way, winning 21-7, whilst the 3rds went down unluckily 10 – 0.
The colts boys played some lovely stuff, and if it weren’t for a couple of handling mistakes and silly penalties, they surely would have won this game. As it was, Petersham won 10-0, but Hillies deserved so much more.
The upper two grades really turned on the style and made it a great finish to the day. The 2nd Grade managed to get sweet revenge on the side who beat them in the Grand Final last year. Petersham were beaten 45-0, with a great team effort. Stand outs were Alex Vertoudkis and La La, both causing damage all afternoon. Tom Kellaway returned and had a great game, whilst Irish led the pack well (if and when anybody could understand what he was saying). Jordan keeps on insisting to kick the ball, 3 was the count this week His excuse, ‘I’m a back rower now so I’m allowed to kick’. Oh dear!
1st Grade respectively had a minutes silence in memory of Tony Brunsdon and then proceeded to tear the opposition apart. The feeling all round after the Beecroft game the Saturday before was that we could have and should have done better despite them being in the league above. So from the kick off, there seemed to be a feeling that we had a something to prove, and prove it we did. There were some lovely exchanges and lines of running all game, which the Petersham defence just could not handle. Bonner and Bates had great games in the centers, and the ball was frequently spread to the speed on the wings in the shapes of Burzin and Will Carew. Stocks stepped in and had a great game at No. 10, whilst Canaan found his targets all game. The defence from the pack around the side of the rucks was faultless, with no-one getting through. James Lindfield (or Linny as Jules would say) stole ball all afternoon and it was good to see Deano back playing, however brief, before he was taken off with concussion. His replacement big Tom Kellaway, didn’t look out of place, and Alex V still managed to get on and score another two tries to add to the two he scored for 2nd Grade. All this with 6 first graders from last season still out injured, Tony and Pete seem to be spoilt for choice. The final score was 59-0 and probably should have been more.
Overall it was a good afternoon and it was good to keep the Brunno cup for another year (if we can find it!). Thanks to Petersham for allowing us to still have the game and their boys battled on. It’s Iggies on Thursday for a night trial, so make sure you’re there to play. It will be tougher challenge and promises to be a great evening for players and spectators. Colts keep off at 6pm, see you there.
GRANT'S ONBOARD
Once again Grant's Butchery has teamed up with Hunters Hill as the sponsor for the end of season trip to Byron Bay 7s. Hunters much appreciates Grant's contribution. Grant's Butchery providing quality meat for all occasions.
See Uluru by Coach
Due to a re-shuffle amongst the coaching staff, the Big Andy (Uluru) Johnson has stepped in as 3rd Grade Coach alongside Lewis Nottidge this year.
This is great news for the club as Andy has been an ever reliable presence in the 1st Grade squad for the past few years and is a master of the scrum. Injuries have prevented him from playing so far this season although I'm sure if he can he will. But until then he will be passing on his considerable knowledge to the 3rd Grade forward pack and if he had his way, the back line as well.
Training
The times for training have been put back to 7pm this season to assist players in getting there on time after work. Can we please all make sure that we are down the Oval by 6.45pm, boots on, ready to run. It’s hard for the coaches to get drills going with numbers still showing up late for training.
Also, if you can’t make training or are unavailable for a game, can you let your respective coaches know as early as possible. Training sessions are planned in advance and the more the coaches are aware of the numbers the better. When the season starts, you will need to contact the various Grade managers to make them aware of availability. A simple phone call, txt, or email is all that needs to be done.
