Vs UNSW

Welcome to season 2010! On the back of last year’s success we've entered the ranks of Subbies elite in division 2. Saturday turned out to be a fairy tale start for the black and white off the back of a bi-polar pre-season. The show of the day kicked off at 3:15 after an awesome seconds victory. The game had everything a serious drama needed to have, good bits, bad bits and nail biting moments. At half time the home crowd was worried. During parts of the game I though I was watching AFL with the back three on both teams playing forcing's back. The game came down to the brilliance of the Beyonce of rugby union.

Suddenly in the last quarter Lala hit the gap fresh from league sprint training. With Dave Marshall sidelined to his niggling hamstring injury. Who was left to convert? Burzin was. Hammo didn't know his mate had it in him. But being right in front even Matt Dunning could kick it. Moment later Lala again hit the gap in the final minutes and this time the defence weren't willing to injure themselves with the 110kg, 5 foot unit running directly at the try line.

I've never heard the crowd cheer so loudly after such an awesome effort even more so when we beat Balmain at home during their ladies day in the final minute. Other note worthy mentions goes to the player of the day Chris Groves and Cosmo Jones. Chris not only played 2s in the heat of the day after countless scrums to but backed up for 1s and played a total of 140 mins for the day. I'm sure Chris has woken up 10 kgs lighter. Chris hasn't played ones since 2006 and I'm sure  his display in both games was favourable to the coaching committee.

Mal the coaching rock of HHRUFC juniors and now seniors was proud when Cosmo "Kraimer" Jones took the field for his virgin debut in first grade. Cosmo hadn't played a game in seniors in his life and to jump in the deep end was a big effort. Cosmo showed strength and determination. Even after getting nailed by the UNSW no. 8 Cosmo jumped back up and re-aligned. Rumor has it Cosmo got up before the 8 did. On that note the colts came away victorious against the African pack trailing by several points mid way through the game.

Once every 35 games magic happens. The magic came in the form of Gac scoring his first try in as many games. The 2nd grade front row was gifted with a smaller opposition and this placed our set piece in tact for Chris Collins outside of the 2nd five Smitty to do his stuff. Collins was swift and nimble, almost Morgan Turinui like in his attack crossing the line to put HH further in the lead. Alex Vertoudakis continued on his try scoring ways off the back of your's trulies pick and drive.

In the other grades thirds went down to UNSW while fourth grade had a strong victory with the absence of props OZ and Browny .Fifth grade had a lot of new players to rugby figuring out how to tackle and how cool ruck marks are. Tip: it's going to sting in the shower, and the ladies love em.

Training

The times for training have been put back to 7pm this season to assist players in getting there on time after work. Can we please all make sure that we are down the Oval by 6.45pm, boots on, ready to run. It’s hard for the coaches to get drills going with numbers still showing up late for training.

Also, if you can’t make training or are unavailable for a game, can you let your respective coaches know as early as possible. Training sessions are planned in advance and the more the coaches are aware of the numbers the better. When the season starts, you will need to contact the various Grade managers to make them aware of availability. A simple phone call, txt, or email is all that needs to be done. Club Captain:

As the incumbent Club Captain a special thanks go to Jules Arndt for his great work last year. Jules took us to four grand finals in addition to winning the overall Subbies Club of the year 2009. Jules has left me with big boots to fill but lucky for us he's still here to give me some tips.

My role for those that don't know, has more elements them sculling beer (or attempting too). The club captains role is to act as the voice of the players and serve as our delegate at board meetings and coaching selections. Therefore any issues with selections or any other general issues regarding players I'm your man.
This year I want to encourage as many people as possible to make both trainings and if not AT LEAST Thursdays. We understand work, family and university commitments but if you can't make either one please inform your coach.  We've had a record number of registrations this season without the numbers actually making it to training. So lets get down to training on Tuesday and Thursday night at 6:30 sharp. Training not only gives you the match fitness but the right skills that are often lacking the Saturday before.

As opposed to last years focus on obtaining the club championship (which we did!!) this years focus is not as defined as we charter somewhat muddy waters. The key is for HHRUFC to remain consistent across the board. The big points are up for grabs in first grade and colts but this doesn't mean the other teams can slack off.

Each team needs to decide where they want to be at the end of the year; middle, top three, premier. This year again will require everyone’s participation is obtaining as many points as possible and stamping our mark in Div 2. Jule's old CCC ended with the hunt continues. If anyone's got an idea for this column or wants to learn more about certain members of the club let me know.

Let the hunt begin!
