Vs Kings Old Boys

Round two turned out to be a tough weekend against a team that had just come down to div 2. The colts kicked off the first game and showed they have the goods to mix it with the best. Cosmo kept to his fine form scoring another try and even had one disallowed. Another strong performance was displayed from the captain lock but was not quite enough to bag colts the game, as they were unable to come away with the win.

Frenchie, standing tall from last weeks try was unable to turn the game the fourth grade match around. Rumour has it Frenchie is very close to a club milestone of 300 games!!! Three more I believe, then he's out. A depleted third grade having several running in the star second grade side ran out ready to make a fresh start. After setting up camp in the KOBs 22 things were looking promising. A number of rushed penalties in front of the posts and a missed tackle mid field saw Kings start to build and capitalise off our mistakes.

Like a relentless minor, Birdie refused to give up playing a major role in three grades. Birdies service in third grade was quality and this proved throughout the grades. Running simultaneously fifth grade somewhere in the Kings Forest were unable to win even under the Big Fishes reign.

Second grade continued on their march to the finals with another fine display!! The giant Chris Groves crossed the line with a powerful pick and drive to score under the posts. Groves is now officially exempt from the naked run at Byron. Running in open play, Mana taught the opposition a thing or two especially around the ruck and in open play. Another bonus point victory assures the team remains first on the ladder.

First grade, what can I say? The game can be summed up in two words: missed opportunities. Several failed conversion attempts by multiple kickers meant the team had to work even harder to beat a competent opposition. The KOBs supporters gave some friendly words of wisdom telling us to use the goal posts as a guide next time! The Hillies Cats were quick to counter with some constructive feedback around scrummaging numeracy.
Captain Weston got within a fraction of the line a number of times but to no avail. Lala again had a number of barn storming runs bumping people left, right and center. Dean Thompson soared metres into the air stealing some much needed line out ball. Despite all these valiant attempts the game ended up going down to the last second! Several phases after a non-contested scrum allowed for Dave Bonner to cross in the corner. An unsuccessful conversion attempt meant the game ended up 20-21 to KOBs.

Training

The times for training have been put back to 7pm this season to assist players in getting there on time after work. Can we please all make sure that we are down the Oval by 6.45pm, boots on, ready to run. It’s hard for the coaches to get drills going with numbers still showing up late for training.

Also, if you can’t make training or are unavailable for a game, let your respective coaches know as early as possible. Training sessions are planned in advance and the more the coaches are aware of the numbers the better. When the season starts, you will need to contact the various Grade managers to make them aware of availability. A simple phone call, txt, or email is all that needs to be done. Club Captain:

If Saturday taught us something, it's that Hillies are on the right track. Although the results on paper may have looked bleak, the games told a different story, and each team, especially 2nd and 1st Grade, has shown just how far we have come in the last 18 months. Kings were a Division 1 side last year, and beat the likes of Drummoyne, but we did not look out of place against them. In my mind, improvement comes from the drive of the players and not just from the coaches.

If we are going to get back to the very top, where Hillies rightfully belongs, then we ourselves need to keep the push going, and that all starts and finishes at training. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Boronia have been on the whole really well attended, but we can not afford to let off now. Subbies rugby is a group effort, and hopefully players realise that members of the committee and coaching staff arrive at Boronia nice and early with plans on what they want to go through and get done. Now if numbers are not the best, or certain players do not give plenty of warning of absence then a lot of drills and training plans go out the window. I think we all agree that a team run on a Thursday is not enough. Let's face it, I'd rather be at rugby with my mates than staying at home watching masterchef

At the end of the day, work and other commitments are fine, but we are so close to achieving great things as a club, and pushing on from last year. Saturday showed that, and if we had had a better attendance and more players to work with, then who knows what the results would have been on Saturday. You realize what it is like when you rock up to training and it's not the best turn out, so think about that if you don't make a Tuesday or Thursday session.

And if you really can‘t make it, please let the respective managers/coaches/captain aware, contacts are on this newsletter so there really is no excuse. This way everything can be planned for the better of the team, and the club. You will find that the club is accommodating to people with prior commitments but we're up a division this year and need to get serious. I'll assure you the other teams are out there training hard wanting to flog us back to div 3. We are making huge strides, but this will always rely on the ethic of team work and not the reliant of others. Do the hard yards yourself and others will follow.

Lets get everybody we can down the HHHs Saturday and enjoy a post match drink.

Keep up the hard work and bring on Barker Old Boys

Let the hunt continue!
