CLEANSWEEP AGAINST EPPING

Hunters Hill Rugby Club could not have asked for at better start to the season, going five from five against the highly ranked Epping Rams in Round One 2009.

Fifth Grade toughed out a close one, sneaking home by two. Reigning premiers Fourth Grade showed that they are likely to be repeat offenders with a commanding 42 (+ bonus) point victory. Congratulations must go to Richie Colley and Liam Cooper for a fantastic coaching debut. Andy Harvey’s hit-men in Third grade once again showed they will be contenders with a solid win. Guided by the Light (Alex) and a dominant back-row, the Seconds kept the wins coming with an excellent bonus point victory. At 3.25 pm 1st Grade ran out under pressure not only to complete the sweep but also to realise the potential of what on paper should be a successful side. They responded, led excellent by skipper Weston and recruits Marshall, Bates and McLennan to record a strong 12 point victory built firmly on a committed and unyielding defence.

An excellent start to season with a lot of work still to do. 17 rounds still to play and everything still to play for.

ROUND 2 - HILLS VS HUNTERS HILL @ YATTENDEN OVAL

This Saturday we travel to the Hills to play, somewhat predictably, Hills. Hills are a club last seen in Division Three in 2006 and are a club on the way up. Our opponents have chosen this round to host their “Back to Hills” day. This most probably will mean a great deal of Hills support by past players and fans. It also means that we will be treated to a Golden Oldies spectacular featuring our very own Cats. These Cats don’t come out to play often, so get a good seat and watch the mastery unfold at 2.45 pm. Also note that because of the extra fixture, most of the games are starting early. 215 club championship points on offer again. We earned 187 last week, lets get the wins and bonus points this time.

PADDY ROBERTS MEMORIAL GAME SATURDAY 25 APRIL ROUND 3 - HUNTERS HILL VS BALMAIN AT BORONIA PARK

Next weekend marks a significant day for the club when we play Balmain at Boronia Park. On that day we will commemorate the life of Paul “Paddy” Roberts. For those new to Hunters Hill, Paddy was an important part of Hunters Hill Rugby Club for the past few years playing in First and Second Grade. Infinitely more importantly he was a special and much-liked bloke: a leader both on and off the field. Paddy sadly passed away during the off-season. He was only 26.

On the 25th of April we will be observing a minutes silence and dedicating the day to the memory of Paddy. It is only fitting that we remember Paddy with a day of rugby, playing the game that he loved. He is, and will be missed.

LADIES DAY: SATURDAY 9TH MAY ROUND 5 - HUNTERS HILL VS HAWKESBURY AT BORONIA PARK:

Hunters Hill Ladies Day will be held on Saturday the 9th of May: Round 5 vs Hawkesbury Valley @ Boronia Park.

The time is now to get your ladies on board. Wives, Girlfriends, Friends, Friends of Friends, people you meet at parties and so on need to be told about what will be a fantastic day out at the rugby. It is up to each and every member of the club to get the word out and make it the biggest and best Hunters Hill Ladies day ever.

NEW CLUB CAPTAIN

With a campaign that discerning pundits were reluctant to compare with Barrack Obama’s “Yes We Can” march to power, Hunters Hill Rugby Club has elected Jules Arndt as the new Club Captain for 2009. Narrowly holding the firm front-rowers union supporter base that Andy Johnson had appealed to so successfully last year, Jules was able to hold out against a fast-surfacing Chris Collins. On news of his victory and to the horror of his loyal supporters, Jules deemed himself already motivated and left before the show. I have said it before and I will say it again: democracy just does not work.

CLUB CAPTAIN’S COLUMN

My name is Jules Arndt and I am Club Captain for 2009.

The first thing I would like to say is a huge congratulations to the club for a solid pre-season and a wonderfully successful start against Epping in Round 1. Five from five is a great message to the rest of Division Three that Hunters Hill mean business in every grade in 2009. Even more importantly, our first result must reinforce to all members of the club that Hunters Hill has the ability to do very well this season and realise our ambitions to climb both the ladder and the divisions. I think we all can feel a shift in momentum this season in both the management of the club and the playing roster. All that remains now is a bit of luck and a lot of hard work. A rugby team is good to play in but great to win in. Lets keep working to realise our potential and do justice to the legacy of our proud and ancient club.

I think it’s necessary to provide a quick reminder as to what it is I am actually supposed to be doing as Club Captain. Obviously the riveting oratory that will go down each and every Saturday at pubs across Sydney is worth hanging around for but my most important role is to provide a representative for the players in dealings with the board and the coaches. If you have an issue with what grade you are in or what position you are playing: talk to me. More importantly I want to ensure every player in this club has opportunity to contribute to our success.  If you want to take some photos, write some web content or have any ideas about how training sessions, game days or the club generally can improve, talk to me and I will try to make them happen.

Season 2009 is upon us. And it’s Hunting Season.
