HILLIES V HILLS @ YATTENDEN: ROUND TWO REVIEW
Four from five was another strong result at Baulkam hills on a “Back to Hills” day in what is our opponents 50th year.
The Fifths drew the short straw against a star-studded “Back to Hills” side and were brave in a 26 point loss.
The Fourths put on another showpiece with a 50 minute 41- zip demolition. Try-freaks Dan Casa and Pat Feige were joined by Brad Chalmers in running rampant.
Thirds toughed it out to win a frustrating and see-sawing 2 pointer. L. Harvey was immense in the clutch as Timmy V’s soldiers showed how to win ugly.
Brucey Purcell led and fed a Joey-infused backline to another hot performance in the Seconds. Their 41-8 conquest now means the twos are sitting on maximum points after two.
An epic struggle in the Golden Oldies saw our Cats claim a nail-biting draw. The ages of many of the depleted Cats were questionable, as was the calculation of the final score.
It was Hammo-time in the 1s as First Grade again provided a happy conclusion to the day’s festivities with a comprehensive 55-7 win. Hammond’s treble put the icing on a territorially dominant display by halves Woodbridge and Marshall and their loyal forwards. Hardman Macrae was ruthless in defence and Dean Thompson freakish in the air as the team enjoyed their best result in a number of years.
Hillies sit in 1st in the club Championship and 1st in three grades. Balmain and Merrylands appear in our fortnightly forecast. How we weather those storms will ultimately give us a far stronger indication of our progress and our prospects.

HILLIES V BALMAIN AT BORONIA: ROUND THREE PREVIEW
An Anzac Day humdinger awaits us this weekend as we take on one of our newest but most bitter foes in the boys from Balmain. The Balmain club continues to grow spectacularly as each year passes and this year they seem stronger than ever. This Saturday presents a fantastic opportunity to test ourselves against a strong club and make an assessment of how we really are travelling after 8 wins from 8.
PADDY ROBERTS MEMORIAL GAME SATURDAY 25 APRIL ROUND 3 - HUNTERS HILL VS BALMAIN
This weekend marks a significant day for the club when we play Balmain at Boronia Park. On that day we will commemorate the life of Paul “Paddy” Roberts. For those new to Hunters Hill, Paddy was an important part of Hunters Hill Rugby Club for the past few years playing in First and Second Grade. Infinitely more importantly he was a special and much-liked bloke: a leader both on and off the field. Paddy sadly passed away during the off-season. He was only 26.
On the 25th of April we will be observing a minutes silence and dedicating the day to the memory of Paddy. We are honoured to have Paddy’s parents attend the game and Coleman Taylor will say a few words on behalf of the club. We should aspire to play this Saturday as we saw Paddy play for Hunters Hill; fiercely but for the love and enjoyment of the game itself.
HUNTERS HILL LITE: UNDER 85kg COMMENCES
Hunters Hill Lite 5 (Cosmo Jones try) lost to Knox Old Boys 24
Best and Fairest: 3- Burzin Mehta, 2- Ed Cummins, 1- Jack Sandell
Tuesday night saw Hunters Hill Lite take up the fight in the NSW Subbies Under 85 kg competition. This comp is a 9 round, 9 team weekday exercise, with games for Hunters Hill being played on seven Tuesday nights and two Wednesdays. The rapid success of the under 85 kg format is due largely to the high speed, high standard play when the dinosaurs among you are quite rightly rendered extinct.
Tuesday night was a promising start with the new side going down 24-5 to an experienced Knox Old Boys.
All interested players should contact the Club Captain or the Under 85kg Coach Angry for details. Players are welcome to play just 85s or both grade and 85s and the development of this team is fantastic for the future of Hunters Hill, providing another avenue for rugby in black and white.
*I am also on the look out for an U85s media liaison to keep the club updated with the reports of their adventures. See Club Captain at training for an interview.
AND GOD SAID - LET THERE BE WHITE, AND THERE WAS

CLUB CAPTAIN COLUMN
Another weekend, another four club championship wins and three bonus points into the Hunters Hill savings account.
The club could not have hoped to be in a better position after Round 2, standing on the top of the Club Championship and in three of the club Championship grades.
Promotion back up the divisions has now been flagged as a medium term goal of the Board and the Management committee. Although we are only two rounds in and arguably greater challenges lie ahead, I thought it might be useful, if a divisional climb is our goal, to all come to an understanding as to how we would go about it.
To put it at its most basic, to put ourselves in a position for promotion, the club must win the club championship. In division three (our division) the results of the first four grades accrue points to the club championship tally. Points are not however awarded equally throughout the grades. Basically the ladder points earned by a team (4 for a win, 1 for scoring 4 tries etc) are multiplied depending on what grade the team plays in, This season a change of rules has meant that bonus points now contribute to the calculation of club championship points.
Points are calculated as follows;
1st Grade Ladder Points are multiplied by 22 ( 110 for a Bonus Point Win)
2nd Grade Ladder Points are multiplied by 12 ( 60 for a Bonus Point Win)
3rd Grade Ladder Points are multiplied by 6 ( 30 for a Bonus Point Win)
4th Grade Ladder Points are multiplied by 3 ( 15 for a Bonus Point Win)
Fifth Grade and Cats Results do not contribute to the Division Three Club Champs.
What are the upshots of the above numbers? Basically this:
Bonus Points are important: If it isn’t already obvious, every team must remember that a bonus point can be crucial not only to a team’s chances but to the club in our quest for a championship. Always remember that the game is not dead until we have an unassailable lead and we have four 5 pointers. If you have to lose, do it by less than seven and score four tries.
Every Grade is Important: The club championship is a mechanism by which every grade can contribute to the overall success of the club. That means that everyone in the club, whatever his grade, has a personal investment in the result of every other game. Support your mates and they will support you.
The importance of First Grade: A brief look at the above numbers will instantly tell you that you cannot win a club championship without a highly competitive First Grade outfit. The support of the Ones has so far been very strong this season, and they, like the teams before them, greatly appreciate those who hang around to support them and especially those who reserve and run water.
There should always be a big Hunters Hill crowd to cheer on our boys whenever and wherever they play. Lets get a huge roll-up for all the grades this Saturday against Balmain, a club who will be not only one of our greatest challenges this season but also a club that is developing into one of our fiercest rivals.
The Hunt continues.
