HILLIES V BROTHERS @ ROSEVILLE CHASE: ROUND SIX REVIEW

Hillies made the trip to Roseville Chase with high hopes of a perfect round. A mixture of bad luck in some grades and bad play in others ensued we would fall well short of that goal. With 3 bonus points, 2 wins, a draw and 2 losses we had a very mixed round and Brothers must be congratulated on what was a spirited performance.

Fifth Grade were up with the sparrows in a contest against Roseville at 10. They also went down by 10, Blake Shields again prominent and John Shaw scoring an eye-catching try.

Fourth grade may have increased their undefeated run to 21 but their record of 20 consecutive Ws has been halted. With almost the entire game being contested on one sideline and a grand total of 7 minutes of actual rugby being played (wunderkind fly-half Scott Keenan's words not mine), the match was always going to be close. The eventual result of 5-5 was probably an accurate reflection of a game that neither side dominated. Colley and Cooper's Comrades will be back no doubt. Pencil the return clash into your iphones.

If Fourth Grade was frustrating then Third Grade was heart-breaking. A 19-0 victory sure, but a victory at the cost of an extremely serious leg injury to one of the club's most dominant players Julian Hill. Our thoughts are with you Jules and we wish you a speedy and successful recovery. The shortened match means the Threes are now the last team left in the club who have won all their games.

And then the good news. The Seconds provided probably the only bright spot of the weekend for the Black and Whites, rampaging to a 52-0 victory. Chase Mason possesses not only the club's second coolest name but also a seriously big game. He ran roughshod over Brothers with Zane Thomas and La La suitable back-up.

In the First Grade fixture, Brothers produced a tenacious performance to snatch victory at the death 28-24, they must be congratulated on a fine maiden victory for the year. Hunters Hill should forget this one, Dan Casa's 14th and 15th tries for this season the only real bright spots.

What we can say is that we still hold our club championship lead, just. Let's resume normal service against the Students this weekend at home.

HILLY UPDATE! - OUT OF HOSPITAL

Hilly is now out of hospital and is back at home. He’s had 2 pins inserted into his ankle and will be off work for about 4-6 weeks.

He’s in good spirits and he says he "will be giving it his all to come back and be our orange peeler”. Various sightings of oranges running for their lives have been reported to police.

HILLIES V UWSH AT BORONIA: ROUND SEVEN PREVIEW

It will be good to get home this weekend against the Students of our competition. 3 weekends remain in the first stanza of the home and away season and Hunters Hill require at least a very good, if not perfect, round to ensure that we retain the club championship lead.

After the frustration and disappointment of last weekend let's cut loose this Saturday.

CLUB CAPTAIN COLUMN: REMEMBER THE HUNTERS
Interview with a Veteran

As I write this, Hunters Hill stands at the top of the club championship. Much credit must be given to the many new players who have injected the club with a burst of life, energy and speed. But a special place at Boronia must be held for those who have bled, shed (tears) and been fed (to the lions) for the club over a number of years.

This week it was my pleasure to interview well-spoken first grade No. 8 Alex Light. Alex was Rookie of the Year in 2003 and in 2009 is still doing the business in First-grade. Alex's career at Hunters Hill has seen him Captain First Grade on countless occasions, span a number of different eras of Hunters Hill teams and seen him take on many opponents over a great range of suburbs in the name of Black and White.

Thanks for your time Alex. To begin with, what was first grade like when you started 7 seasons ago?

It was a while ago and my memory’s not the best. There were some pretty big boys though. That much I remember. There was this enormous bloke called Iona (pronounced Jonah) who played number eight. Scared the shit out of me. Liam Cooper was the other breakaway that year, and Loni was playing too. We didn’t have the best season on the pitch but as you’d expect it was the back’s fault. Frenchie.

Who was the best player you played with at HH?

Loni... Anyone who’s played in a World Cup has to rank pretty highly.

Best HH Team played in?

I have never managed a Cup at Hunters although we were Farrant Cup semi-finalists (in twos) in 2007.

Biggest rival club?

Chatswood always were good, tough opponents. Petersham are probably more so now, but Balmain shaping up there as well.
Team you hated playing against?

Campbelltown. It was like a race war between Tonga and Samoa and unfortunately Hunters Hill were stuck in the middle.

How is the club different now to when you started?

There’s a great club spirit this season that I’ve not seen before at the club. Everyone is genuinely putting it in, and everyone is pushing to get up the grades. We haven’t had this in many years gone by and it’s difficult to maintain... But it’s great to be a part of when it’s happening.

Best moment in the club?

Fourth grade’s premiership last year was a great victory. But I’ll never forget scoring a try under the posts in my debut game down in front of the hill. The old drunk bastards went nuts.

Best thing about HHRFUC?

The people. I’ve made some great mates through the club and it keeps me coming back every year.

Where will HHRFUC be in five years?

First division.

Where will you be in five years?

On a yacht in the Caribbean. But I’ll be thinking of you guys.

Thanks Alex

The hunt continues.
Jules

Thursday 28th May is Ballywood night. The flashiest Bally Bar theme night of the year. Celebrating all things Indian. Why? Because we can. All players who theme up get Bally Bar discount. Theme food, Theme Beer, Theme Music. Theme people.

BYRON TOUR: DEPOSIT MUST BE PAID BY JULY 25TH!!

We have a date for action. A $50 deposit needs to be paid by the 25th of July to Chris Groves or Wookie to finalise tour kit. Check your diary today, mark it, withdraw $50 and hand it to Chris on Saturday.

Byron may be beautiful in September but it is stunning in October and it turns out that that is when the tour is on. Appreciate it in Black and White. Talk to Groves, Wookie or Jules for your itinerary.

BOXING NIGHT FUNDRAISER FOR HUNTERS HILL

On 6th of November at Sydney Centre Olympic Park an absolutely massive night of amateur boxing will occur.

Hunters Hill has the opportunity to raise funds for our club and for our tour by selling tickets to this event. Tickets are $30 and for every ticket we sell $22.50 goes back to Hunters Hill. This is a fantastic opportunity to raise funds and the night is designed to help sports clubs raise money. The night includes more punches than a Springboks v France Test, giveaways, a 3 course meal and drinks, live music and special guests.

More information will be given at training by Dave Weston, keep your ears out. It stands to be a good night, some good fights and good way to get your club some spending money.

BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY

Do not lose hope. The photo-blog is not dead, the photo-blogger just has moved house. Many apologies for the slow uptake, all will be resolved shortly.

ONFIELD INJURY PROCESS

As mentioned previously, Saturday’s games against Brothers saw a sickening end to the 3rd grade game with Hilly’s injury, along with a Brothers player suffering a neck injury later in the day. While we never ever want to see anything like that happen again, it’s important we follow some simple yet very important steps when someone goes down with a serious injury.
Firstly, nobody touch them or move them, call for the physio, preferably by name (Her name is Kym) rather than just screech “physio!” and wait for her assessment. If she deems it necessary then she will either call for an ambulance or designate someone to call, we don’t need a bunch of people jumping on the phone and ringing for ambulances like what happened last Saturday, I know you were all concerned and it was well meaning, it just adds to the confusion. If an ambulance is not required Kym will organise for the player to be moved by designated helpers in the appropriate manner.
