HILLIES V HAC @ BORONIA: ROUND SEVEN REVIEW

Hunters Hill v HAC was a wet day for big men. It was also a day when Hillies secured their highest scoring round of the season, grabbing 212 of the 215 club championship points, a mere Fourth grade BP off an ace of 215.

Speaking of Fourth grade, 22 games without defeat and a welcome return the winners circle. Cooper was tenacious in the contest, streaking away for wonderful try. Kellaway, busy as ever , was bustling on the wing. Scotty Keenan produced a complete performance at 10, his last as a 23 year old, courageous in defence and organised in attack. But the biggest cheer of the day went to club legend Loni Katoa. Thrown into the fray in the final minutes, the former Tongan international showed his own son the way to the line and powered over for the game-sealing try. Man of the match in a five minute performance is as efficient as it gets.

Timmy V returned for the 3's clash, as the club's undefeated tyros produced a lopsided win against an out-gunned opposition. Richie Smith may not be the most famous (or infamous) English gentleman in the club but he possesses a fine game. He grabbed two tries in a points -fest that saw the second big(gish) man of the day, Timmy Vertoudakis grab three points for an aggressive performance. Well done Threes, keep the machine turning.

The Seconds had a good win on an increasingly muddied field. Hammond was again strong in attack while the big-man Brian Walker grabbed two tries and the man of the match award for a sizable performance. The Twos have a test this week against Blacktown, lets hope they can produce the goods again.

After defeat last week and two agonising losses to HAC last season, Hunters Hill First grade waded out into the slop with a point to prove. A 39-10 victory was a good result, the black and white line only being breached on the final play of the match. The third man of the match honour to go to a prop went to the key-stone of Boronia Park, Andy Johnson. Andy celebrated his recall to first grade with a devastating scrummaging performance, he and Weston completely destroying the big HAC pack at the set piece. In the other less interesting parts of the field, Mehta was again a menace running back, Lane was a missile in attack and Colman Taylor hit with fury.

Four conclusive victories confirms the progress of the Club from last year when we were on the end of a similar result. Cheers to the HAC boys for their performance and good spirits and attendance at the Hunters Hill Hotel after the match. It is much appreciated.

HILLIES V BLACKTOWN AT BORONIA: ROUND EIGHT PREVIEW

It it a rare thing to have two home games in a row. With any luck we will be back on Boronia No. 1 against the big boys from Blacktown. Suitably impressive in taking out the First Grade title last year, Blacktown are a strong club full of pace. A few disappointing results will ensure they are primed for a battle. If we are to defend the fortress this Saturday we must come ready to play.

CLUB CAPTAIN COLUMN

And the black and white hunting machine rolls on. Seven games in, all sides in finals contention and a comfortable club championship lead. Plain sailing right? Well not exactly.

For one, the next two games are pretty massive. Both Petersham and Blacktown featured strongly in last year's finals with Blacktown taking out One's and Petersham playing in every Granny and taking out two of them. It is absolutely crucial we finish the first stanza of the home and away season with two good performances, giving ourselves the best possible chance to make a run for the finals .

The second point is that any inspection of the draw will tell you the second half of 2009 will be a tougher ask for Hunters Hill than the first. There are a number of tricky away games in our future as well as the prospect of coming up against teams like Epping who have improved dramatically over the course of the season.

What can you do about it?

We need to put the work in NOW if we want the reward later. Keep coming to two trainings a week, keep fronting up on Saturday keen to play. Spots in every grade are more competitive than ever. Set yourself a goal for the rest of the season and go and do it.

We as a club have a chance this year to do something special. Lets take that chance.

The hunt continues.

BALLY BAR REPORT

This week saw Ballywood raise its curried head with papadums, nann, and coconuted banana all eaten before training began. Bally offered two types of curry, Vegetarian and Meat in one pot, and the same in the other pot.

Bally Bar Management only received two complaints of curry iceblocks. This was deliberate and unfortunately the complainants were too late to claim their prize.

Major efforts of dress ups went to Frenchy, who wore a dot, and Doddsy, who wore a hat.

Look for next months theme night which is Snow Season Opening.
