HILLIES V MERRYLANDS @ BORONIA: ROUND THIRTEEN REVIEW

A day that brought together the top two clubs of Division Three was always going to be a tough encounter. Three losses including First Grade was not ideal, but the weekend gave us plenty of hints for upcoming matches against a side sure to be there come finals time.

The Fives started the day, as always, with a solid performance against a World Champion Convicts side. While Laurie Mullan was a spark in attack and Tom Simshauser got over for a try, the Black and Whites would start with a 12-5 loss.

The last time the two Fourth grade sides met, Hillies had to rely on a last second try to get them over the line. Not this time unfortunately. Fielding a hot side with many players warming up for matches later in the day, Merrylands scored a commanding 28-5 victory. Brad Chalmers scored a long range try and Dave Bonner sparkled in his Hunters Hill debut.

Third Grade is still unbeaten after a clinical 21-7 victory. Matt Taka was all over the field yet gain while Chris Collins hit hard and often in the centres. Pat Feige certainly had a week to remember, marking his 100th Hillies appearance with a try to follow his Commander's Commendation in his other life in the Royal Australian Navy. The fact that he walked away with the meat tray seemed almost scripted. Perhaps it was.

The Seconds again toughed out a close one with Cam Van Oirschot again a star in a 14-8 victory. The Seconds are still leading the log and are starting to look very dangerous. La La is back in the backline and ready to rumble.

The First Grade match was a strange one and much must be learnt from it before the next clash of these sides. In the first twenty minutes, Hillies were superb, nailing their set-plays to grab four tries including the record-breaker to Dan Casa (See below for further details) to set up a 24-7 lead.

The next hour saw the Wolves attack and 6 excruciating bites later, Hunters Hill were left wounded on the back of a 46-24 mauling. Credit must go to a fine Merrylands side that never gave up and kept breaking tackles. Luke McLennan and Coleman Taylor can hold their head up with fine performances in the backrow while the deputising scrum-half Luke Bird produced a strong game at 9 in his First 1st Grade start of the year.

Not the result we wanted but the 2's and 3's result leave us just 56 points behind Merrylands in the Club Championship race. We will need to be very good to catch them but with a game in hand against Epping we still have a chance to do so.

SEASON TRY-SCORING RECORD IS SMASHED AT BORONIA

While First Grade had a disappointing loss, a historic moment occurred when outside centre Dan Casa crossed for a try early in the match.

His try brought his season tally up to an incredible 22 and in doing so broke Marcus Seuseu's record for most tries in a season of 21, set in 16 Kentwell Cup games in 1995.

Dan is new to the club in 2009 and has worked his way up from 4th grade to become a regular try-scorer in First-grade.

He has missed out on only one weekend so far (against Blacktown) and had a particularly fruitful morning against Balmain in Round 3 collecting 5 tries all up (3 in 4s and 2 in 2s)

On behalf of HHRFUC we would like to congratulate Dan on a fine achievement and may he score many more in Black and White. (See below for interview)

HILLIES V HAWKESBURY VALLEY @ McQUADE: ROUND FOURTEEN PREVIEW

We are getting extremely close to the pointy end of the season and literally every game from here on in has the potential to decide our Club Championship and finals positions.

We have been relatively lucky in some respects that much of the season so far has been relatively close to home. This weekend we begin our first trek, and it's to the Valley.

Hawkesbury are traditionally a very physical rugby club and while picturesque, their ground has the potential to be a graveyard for visiting teams. We must be on high alert when we take on Hawkesbury's mid-table but very strong sides.

The Valley boys were extremely gracious visitors to our patch early on in the season so let's return the favour, get on the bus and enjoy the day.

PLEASE READ:

Because of the recent wet weather and a broken pipe, the Windsor sports council has put some conditions to use McQuade Park this weekend.

They are as follows.

1)  No spectators allowed inside the picket fence.
2)  No warming up inside the picket fence. This is to happen next door.
3) The only persons allowed inside the picket fence are players on the field, linespersons and the water persons.
4) Subs and coaches and manager must also stay outside the fence.

We can have a tunnel onto the field through the main gate but supporters must go straight to the side line and back out the gate as soon as the players are on the field.

Please respect these rules Hunters.

Where Valley Stands

Club Championship: 7th

1st Grade: 6th- 26 points from the lead
2nd Grade: 5th- 11 points from the lead
3rd Grade: 8th- 34 points from the lead
4th Grade: 7th- 29 points from the lead

“FROM THE ARCHIVES”

Our annual “Back to Boronia Day” will be held on Saturday the 22nd of August on the final round against Petersham.

To begin the build-up to this great event, the Archive Committee will be running a series of historical blurbs in the coming newsletters. This week they are taking us back to the winter of 1969.

The Start of an Era

Background

In 1966 the club entered a team in the Judd Cup A division, being defeated by the eventual premier Colleagues, 9 – 0, in the divisional final. The following year, Hunters Hill was again defeated by the eventual premier, Macquarie University, 9 – 3 in the Judd Cup C division semi final. In 1968, the club entered teams in both the Whiddon and Judd Cup C divisions, without any success.
In 1969 the club again entered teams in the Whiddon and Judd cups, this time playing in the D division, winning their first sub-district premiership since 1955, defeating Reserve Bank 8 – 3 in the Whiddon Cup.

On Saturday the 22nd August 2009 @ Boronia Park, HHRUFC will be celebrating the 40th anniversary, and the Start of an Era winning Whiddon Cup victory in 1969.

CLUB CAPTAIN'S COLUMN: Interview with a Record-Breaker

Last Saturday we witnessed a record on our beloved Boronia. 22 tries after 12 weekends of football is no small feat. This week I caught up with the man who is always over the line, our own Dan Casa.

Hey Casa, thanks for speaking with us. To begin with, you are a newbie to club this year. What made you want to start at Hunters Hill in 2009?

I wanted a new challenge after playing league for 18 years. Richard (Mr Colley- 4th grade coach) got in contact with me and told me he needed a centre in 4ths.

I think I heard a rumour that your Dad played League?  Can you give us any details?

Dad played through his schooling and also represented the Balmain Tigers in the lower grades after finishing Year 12. When he was offered a first grade contract rejected it simply because there was more money in working in the family business and if he got injured no one would pay his wages.

You have broken an all-time record at a club that started all the way back in 1892. How does that make you feel?

Quite proud although much credit should be given to the players around me who have been helping my through the grades especially Richie and Fiji Tim. The boys in 1st grade have also been great with Sammy and Marsh always willing to give advice. So although I’m ecstatic with the record, much credit must be given to the rest of the boys.

Have you always been a try scorer? Any details?

I guess so, usually I like to get around 20+ tries a season. I have scored 4 and 5 tries in a couple of games of League in the past. One of the memorable tries was on TV in the Schoolboys Arrive Alive Cup when we (Holy Cross Ryde) took down the Cup favourites 30 - 0 in a game predicted to be the total opposite.

Favorite try so far this year?

There all worth the same mate, although took me half the season to figure tries in Rugby are worth 5 and not 4 like League lol. But one try that stands out was when we beat Balmain in the 4ths (in Round 3). We were down by 3 tries with 10 minutes to go and ended up winning. Those 3 were memorable especially the last one as in was right on the buzzer.

Any Favourite Rugby/League players?

I've only watched a handful of Rugby matches but Nonu (think that’s his name) is a big strong centre whose game I've tried to watch and learn from. As for League players - it has to be Andrew Johns. He is the only player I have ever watched who could win a game single handedly no matter who he had behind him.

How are you liking Hunters Hill Rugby?

I'm loving the club and the game. The boys are great, they have all welcomed me in and made me feel comfortable.

Any predictions for the rest of the season?

I have a couple of small ones. I am going to set the record at 30, Hunters Hill to take out 4 grades and claim the Club Championship. We will meet Merrylands in GF and finally put them to the sword. And Stuey will get married and live happily ever after.

BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY

The photo-blog site has been resuscitated and for the most part is going fairly well.

It is a site that welcomes everyone’s photos so bring a camera down and take some shots. Better yet bring someone with a camera down and get them to take some.

Assistance is always appreciated especially for Seconds and First Grade to get some decent photos. If interested in helping out, just ask Jules.

FIRST GRADERS COMING THROUGH.

The Under 15's at Hunters Hill have over 56 players registered making them one of the biggest in Australia. They are playing in the highest competition in NSW and are currently running second.
12 boys from the Hunters Hill team were selected in the Gordon Rep team that was runners up in the State Championships in June. Since then 4 boys have been selected in the Northern Zone team and three of them have now made the Sydney team. Hunters Hill has more boys in the team than any other club. Most clubs are excited to get one player in but Hunters Hill have 3.
The Sydney players are - James Goldie (flanker), Tom Wilson (Hooker and Prop) Sam Kitchen (hooker)
Northern Zone players- James Goldie, Tom Wilson ( Capt), Jack Tourish, Sam Kitchen
Gordon Reps- Nathan Salmon, Harry Randell, James Goldie, Brendan Wheatley, Harry Jenkins, James Fletcher, Jack Tourish, Pat Fowler, Tom Wilson, Mike Spain, Ollie Bartlett, Sam Kitchen.

The Sydney under 15 squad is using Boronia Park as their training base for the next 3 weeks on Wednesday.

Congratulations to all these boys for making these teams.
