HILLIES V BROTHERS @ BORONIA: ROUND FIFTEEN REVIEW

vsBrothersGrabbing 98.6% of the Club Championship points on offer for last weekend seems to me to be a pretty good day out. On a Saturday when there were a number of notable absences from every grade, we can be very happy that we did the required job to keep our season bubbling.

The Fifths would take on a Forest 14 + Paul Shields. Despite another eye-catching performance from Mitch Tyson-Mobbs, a lively game from Skipper-Wing Shane Phelan and a power-packed cameo by President Salmon, the Fives would go down by a solitary kick.
Fourths was always going to be the match of the day. After a frustrating 5 all draw to begin the season, the two sides squared off like prize-fighters looking to land the winning blow. A cheeky kick-chase-and-score by “Fiji Tim” opened the account for the home side before the sideline conversion was nailed by Ron White. There can be no doubt that Brothers 4th Grade are one of the best drilled sides in the comp and the graft resulted in further possession, further points and an 11-7 lead. As the clock wound down, Hillies needed a hero. Enter Tom Kellaway. Thrust to the wing in the wake of injuries, it was the larger Kellaway who would streak down the sideline to finish the Brothers off in another 4th Grade heart-stopper. This result set 4th grade up for a run to the finals and a serious defence of their premiership crown.

vsBrothersThird Grade was perhaps less exciting, but they did enough to put away a brave Brothers side. Kane Nicholson was just too good in the midfield snaring 3 tries while Gelling was as always a threat.

A reshuffled Seconds side continued their hot run of form taking Brothers to the cleaners to the tune of 51-0. Mike Kellaway was commanding at 10 and Nathan Michael showed he knows how to get over the line in a 3 try performance. The Hammer’s return to the forwards nailed two tries and a conversion while Will Wright made every post a winner in a livewire display.
With four key absences and a lot to prove against Brothers, First Grade can be very relieved after their clear 24-10 win.
Following a diabolical performance that saw the Black and Whites go down 24-28 in May, the four tries to two result was sweet relief for a side looking to fine tune their game in the last month of the regular season.

vsBrothersBeing able to promote players of the calibre of Van Oirschot, Vertoudakis, Mason and Macrae from Second Grade is a luxury that Hunters Hill should be thankful for. This depth was demonstrated early as the fearless Number 7 Alex V crashed over for the first try.

With stand-in Skipper and No.8 Alex Light employing a powerful running game around the fringes, Hillies began to dominate territory and further first half tries to Jordan Butler and Sam Henry ensured they would take a lead into halftime.

While the second half proved less productive for the Hillies, they continued to apply pressure to the Brothers line, particularly through the scheming efforts of scrum-half Stuart Woodbridge. That pressure would finally tell with the game-sealing try to new fullback Chase Mason who sprinted under the posts at the 60 minute mark.

HILLIES V EPPING @ Dundas: (WET WEATHER ROUND) PREVIEW

It feels like an age since we last played Epping and at 16 weeks it is certainly close to that.

Epping are a stronger and fitter side than the one we took on in Round One.

For First Grade, this weekend is the first taste of finals-like footy. Given the smorgasbord of high-pressure stuff to feast on in the few weeks, this week should be a very revealing appetizer.

President and Club Captain Reports

“The remarkable success of 1979 has been achieved without any degradation of the principal that every club activity is directed towards a result which will, in some way, enhance or benefit all players and all teams”, said Morrie Willcoxson into his 8th year as President.

Club Captain, Ian ‘Cowboy’ Ross said “ to retain the Kentwell Cup for the third successive year, which had never been done before, to win the Judd Cup and to win the Bruce Graham Shield for the club championship for the second time in three years was a truly magnificent effort; one which everyone connected with the club can be justifiably proud.”

These people along with a host of others shaped the culture and ethos of a champion club at the time, the theme within all reports was how great the club was because of the number of people willing to be involved with making it great.  It would be reticent to name names if only for fear of omitting some, however there will be more to follow from three peat Kentwell Cup coach Tony Brunsdon in the weeks to come.

After a record 8 players in the sub-district rep team in 1978, Hunters Hill had 1st grade best and fairest winner halfback Andy Mostyn, fullback Peter Miles and for the third consecutive year, try scoring centre David Polly in 1979.
All grades best & fairest was shared between Michael Oakley and Malcolm Baird, winning 2nd and 3rd grade respectively and Tony Brown took the 4th grade award.

John Whittington scored 175 points (7 tries, 24 goals, 32 penalty goals, 1 field goal) with next top scorer Brian Robertson with 92 points, (3 tries, 7 goals, 22 penalty goals) Brian at the time held the club record for most points with 208 scored in Kentwell Cup in 1972.

Much can be taken from the reports from the President and the Club Captain.
