Get to Boronia @ 9:30 for a 10:30 arrival at Blacktown, in time for 5th grade.

Make the effort. Become a clubman. Sit on a bus.

GET READY FOR...........

BACK TO BORONIA DAY – SATURDAY 22ND AUGUST

What are you doing on next Saturday (22nd August)?

  • It's the last home game at Boronia Park.
  • All 4 grades are currently in the top 4 and all look good things to be in the semi's (same as 30 years ago - there is a theme starting to develop already).
  • There is a Golden Oldies game before First Grade with the CATS taking on Dads Army (made up of juniors fathers).
  • It's back to Boronia and Sponsors Day.
  • The game is against Petersham and the Brunno Cup will be contested and we want it back!
  • The CATS new playing gear will be handed out on the day.
  • Team photo's will be taken on the day and will include the Seniors 5 grades, the CATS, along with any of the 1979 players present, and we hope to include an entire Hunters Hill Club photo with all past and present players including the juniors.
  • And the days theme will be to revisit the great teams of 1969 and 1979 with 1969 being a year of Kentwell Cup victory and 1979 being a very successful year for the club with all 4 sides making it into the semi finals.
  • The Archives Committee will be putting together a display of club memorabilia with a 1969 and 1979 theme.
  • There will be amusement rides for kids and a game of touch for them on Oval 2 after the Cats vs Dads Army game.
  • Tri Nations Aus v NZ game is on that night at the HH Hotel.

How many more reasons do you need?

It's not just about 1969 & 1979. No matter what years you were involved with the club, come along for what promises to be a great day.

If you are a Hilly, it's time to get back to Boronia.

HILLIES V HAC @ COLLEGE - ROUND 16 REVIEW

vsHUVIt was hot at HAC for a Round 16 slug-fest and the boys in blood and mustard didn't disappoint.

There is certainly something a bit different about playing against the Students at their place. Their air is a bit fresher, their field more spacious and their steak sandwich is simply magnificent.

Hunters Hill 4th Grade 15 lost HAC 24

Very disappointing and one of those very short 4th grade games where you know from the kick-off that something is a bit off. Ron White was always trying to spark something and did so with a try while Maxy Marraffa never gave up and tackled himself to a stand-still.

Hats off to a talented HAC side who have come good recently. The loss makes it slightly more difficult for Fours who have lost a bit of breathing space for a top two finish. Hold on boys, reinforcements are coming soon.

Hunters Hill 3rd Grade 31 beat HAC 0

In a match that will probably be remembered more for its unpleasantness than its tries, Threes got it done a 16th time. Rob Carter made a return as anticipated as that of his cousin Dan and Rocky Ronzel ensured press-darling Taka would not be missed too greatly.

Andy Harvey continued on his try-scoring spree, later teaming up with his Bro for a spree of the fist variety. Both players will appreciate their 10 minute rest, they have a big month ahead.

Gray was always a pest on the field but would prove a disappointment on the way home. I guess once you've jumped out of a plane once, an encore just isn't that appealing.

Hunters Hill 2nd Grade 24 beat HAC 7

Bates, Burzin and Brian ensured that the twos would keep cooking. Walker's try scoring ability is making the rest of us look silly. Bates didn't want to be tackled, so he wasn't. Burzin showed his class yet again. Will he make next week's Club Captain's Team of the Year? Tune in next week to find out.

Hunters Hill 1st Grade 45 beat HAC 25

Hunters Hill were probably a bit flat. HAC have a hell of a lot of pride in the jersey and they were as physical as ever. It was always going to be a fairly tough day at the office.

The melee which produced a poker face from the touch judge and a full-house (1 red and two yellow cards) from the referee would change the game dramatically. Without a winger, Hillies had an overlap by definition and that is always a winning position.

To their credit, HAC kept tackling and grabbed 4 tries of their own, a 45-25 score line probably indicative of a match where the two sides traded blows only for the Black and Whites to kick away at the death. In light of other First grade results from this round, Hunters probably can be happy they grabbed the 5 points. It guarantees second and puts the emphasis now on performance rather than hypotheticals.

Social Report

It was great to see a good number of bus-brothers at the Richy Hotel for after-match drinks. We have got on well with HAC this year off the field and it was great to return their big attendance at HHH with some boys of our own.

The bus trip home was nothing short of magical. Chase's brother started strongly and set us up for a strong first-half. Weston tried out some old classics, while DJ Jules ensured that selected hits would be screamed over and ruined.

Dave Marshall taught us a new song and then things get hazy. Luke McLennan became teary-eyed at Dave Dobbyn's slice of heaven and we had a haka-off. Dustin's brother would finish particularly strongly, living on a prayer that he would one day become known as Chase again.

By the time Neil Finn was telling not to dream, it was over and we were deposited back at HHH to go our separate ways (Bistro, Bar or Beer Garden).

Special and great thanks to Mr and Mrs Renny who were firm but fun parents on the bus and the Bus driver who was quite possibly the best bus driver in Sydney. His reward was to be two burnt CDs which will no doubt bring him undoubted street cred around... well.....people like us.

Passenger of the Bus: Chase's Brother tied with Dustin's Brother.

FROM THE ARCHIVES

The Kentwell Cup Three Peat

In 1979 the title defence didn’t start well, losing 5 of the first 9 games in 79.  Coach Tony Brunsdon reported “every game in the second round was a grand final and having to play the minor semi final made the task immense”.  The team then won 11 of the final 12 games, avenging their Rd 6 and Rd14 losses  to St Patricks Old Boys  20 – 6 in the semi and then 21- 12, in the Grand Final. This victory created a record within sub district making Hunters Hill first club to win the Kentwell Cup three times in succession.

John Whittington scored 175 points (7T, 24G, 32PG, 1FG) and David Polly scored 11 trys including 1 in the semi, 2 in the final and 1 in the grand final. There were 19 different try scorers. The only game not to score a point was lost 0-12 to Lane Cove  at the turn of the round. Revenge came in the final round at Boronia winning 16-7 and then thumping them in the final 29 -8 at Drummoyne Oval. The Grand Final against St Pats was tough, although 3 converted tries and a penalty goal saw off a determined St Pats team trying to break the stranglehold Hunters Hill has on the Kentwell Cup.

The team was: 1. Gavin Cornford, 2. John Pausey, 3. Nick Hutchinson, 4. Grant Millard, 5. Michael McNamara, 6. Alan Garrick, 7. Alan Cuthbert, 8. Bob Johnston, 9. Andrew Mostyn, 10. Geoff Forster (c.), 11. Bob Beasley, 12. David Head (1T), 13. David Polly(1T), 14, John Whittington(1T,3G,1PG), 15. Peter Miles.
Tony Brunsdon’s report says it all about the season.

Support the Archives Committee: Scanner Needed.

You may be aware that The Archive Committee has started work on capturing, recording and filing the fairly significant amount of material we currently hold on the history of Hunters Hill Rugby. They are capturing details of all photos - the earliest going back to 1906 - and ultimately they will have a record of all those known to have played for the Club.

A critical part of the process is to digitally record the material so that they have all records available in the event of the originals being damaged or lost, and so they can reproduce as and when required.

They have had two generous donations of a desktop and a lap top that have enabled the process to get going. However, they are still in need of one more item - a high quality resolution scanner capable of handling A3 size documents.

If anyone has such a scanner surplus to their needs, or indeed might be in a position to donate one for TAC's use, please contact
