MAJOR SEMI-FINALS REVIEW

Fourth Grade 5 lost to Merrylands 43

Fourth Grade came into this game ranked second and came off second-best. Although we were unlucky to run into a Merrylands fourth grade side containing a few Subbies superstars, we will have to play smarter if we are to challenge again this season. The scoreline wasn’t flattering for a semi-final but we are not out of it yet. Mitch Tyson-Mobbs popped up for another try in what was a great cameo off the bench and Fiji Tim never gave in.  The 4’s have Petersham this weekend if they want another crack at the Wolves. Grand Final re-match!!

Third Grade 11 beat Petersham 6

Third Grade came into the match as Minor Premiers and left it with a ticket to the Granny. A hard-fought win that starred a hard-fought hooker (Tim Dodds), I am sure the Threes will appreciate a week off. The Rock crossed and the D held up. Let’s hope Merrylands and Petersham bash each other senseless.

Second Grade 12 lost to Petersham 16

The rematch from last week and a similar result. Close but just off the pace. The Twos have Balmain this weekend sudden-death and have a chance to put that club to bed this season. AV’s boys are very close to top gear, lets hope they crack it this Saturday.

First Grade 31 lost to Merrylands 32

First Grade has made a promising but ultimately unsuccessful start to the finals series against the Wolves from Merrylands. In what was a high quality and superbly entertaining match, the Black and Whites were again cruelly denied in injury time, going down 32-31 to a last-play penalty goal.

Early breaks by a large and talented Merrylands backline translated into a healthy lead, with the Wolves looking to book their place in the Grand Final at the earliest opportunity. To their credit Hillies refused to yield under intense pressure and slowly clawed their way back into the game. Both sides traded tries for the duration of the match, Hillies eventually building a two point lead only to see it extinguished at the death through a straightforward penalty strike.

Centre Duncan Taylor and big winger Ben Bates were stand-outs for Hillies with both men ensuring the advantage line was crossed at every opportunity. Sam Henry hit Dan Casa beautifully out wide for the winger to cross for try number 27 in 2009 and fly-half Dave Marshall conducted his backline expertly. Rangy locks Dean Thomson and Jordan Butler ensured that the Wolves would receive only scraps at the line-out in a dominant display in the set-piece.

Hunters Hill must now play reigning premiers Blacktown in a sudden-death preliminary final this Saturday to qualify for a much anticipated re-match against the Wolves. With Hillies and Blacktown also separated by a solitary point in their last encounter, the match in Granville promises to be another blockbuster.

CLUB CAPTAIN’S COLUMN: CCC TEAM OF THE YEAR

julesBloodThis week I will be naming the final five members of my team of 2009. I have chosen players whose season has been memorable in my mind regardless of the grade they played in. This is what’s called a conversation piece. Feel free to heckle me during speeches if not selected.

The team so far:
Prop- Dave Weston (1s)
Hooker- Tim Dodds (3s)
Prop- Mitch Tyson-Mobbs (5s)
Lock- Adrian Harvey (3s)
Lock- Jordan Butler and Dean Thomson (1s)
Blindside Breakaway - Luke McLennan (1s) and Joel Firth (4s)
Openside Breakaway- Matt Taka (3s)
Number Eight- Jon Gelling (3s)

Scrum-half- Robbie Gray (3s)
Fly-half- Dave Marshall (1s)

This Week’s Selection:

The Back-Five

Wing: Burzin Mehta (1s/2s)
Runner Up: Ben Bates (1s/2s)

A small man with a big game, Burzin likes to play and Burzin likes to talk. With a game far cleaner than his language, this pacey potty-mouth has had a huge year in a number of positions. Generally I don’t condone kung-fu kicks to the crotch, but since I don’t want to be called a %#@!ing  %$#@!er, I will keep my mouth shut.

Inside-Centre: Sam Henry (1s)
Runner-Up: La La Havea (2s) (Very Unlucky)

A stand-out excitement machine with a predilection for single-word sentences, Sammy has been a breath of fresh hyperactive air at Boronia this season. Sammy’s season is probably best expressed in his own words: Hunters. Team. D. Team. Hunters. Team. Hunters. Hunters.

Outside Centre: Dan Casa (1s, 2s, 3s, 4s)
Runner Up: Scott Keenan (4s)

27 tries presents a fairly water-tight argument. The fact that Dan had scored 20 of them before he realised they were worth 5 points each is irrelevant. Dan has the unique ability to not only sculpt his own guns but to cut his own hair.

Wing: Brad Chalmers (4s)
Runner Up: Mike Kellaway (2s)

The latest on a great line of HX HH Schoolboys, Chalmers has done a superb job on the flank for fighting Fours. A natural finisher who is only getting bigger, watch this space.

Fullback: Richie Colley (4s) (Captain)
Runner Up: Matt Lane (1s) (Very, Very Unlucky)

Every fantasy team needs a roughie, and here is mine. Out of position? Yes. A bit tough on Laney? Perhaps. A must-have in this team? Definitely. Alfie Langer’s and Terry Lamb’s love-child, Colley has had a season to remember, sniffing out a try or 5 and marshalling his troops with Uncle Coops as only they can. At the back he can tell the superstars where to stand, tell the pigs where to be and tell the ref what to do (as opposed to Laney who may tell him where to go.)

So there you have it, the 2009 CCC team of the year. A side to take whoever and all their St. Pats and lay them directly onto their spinal region. They were good, but are they bloody good? In nine days we will know.
