FINAL REVIEW

It was there to be done and we did it. Four teams, fours Grannys and four shots at glory.

With Third Grade having already qualified, the Hillies effort of all four competition sides making the decider represents a remarkable achievement and one which we have not completed in 30 years.

Fourth Grade 21 beat Petersham 7

Reigning Premiers Fourth Grade ensured that they will be there on the final day, with their 2008 Grand final re-match against Petersham ending in a clear 21-7 victory. The scrum was magnificent again, Brownie and Oz’s power allowing Skipper Richie to take on evil-Bones down the blindside for the opening score. With Scott Liddicoat causing havoc and Tom Kellway again excellent, the result was never in doubt. Merrylands await.

Second Grade 32 beat Balmain 17

In Second Grade, a sublime three-try performance by Hillies fly-half Michael Kellaway ensured that Second grade would also reach the main event. The Seconds' 32-17 win sets them up for a Grand Final against minor premiers Petersham.

First Grade 38 beat Blacktown 19

For First Grade, the final against the reigning premiers Blacktown on a dusty Granville pitch was an archetypal game of two halves. Although stung by a last minute 14-15 loss in their last encounter, Hillies struggled to maintain consistent focus in a first half where a massive Blacktown side proved they were big match performers, skipping out to a two-try lead. Jordan Butler closed the gap with a typically opportunistic try to get the Hillies on the board while curly-headed fullback Matt Lane kept the Hunters in it until half-time with a number of superb pressure plays.

Impassioned words from skipper Dave Weston and stalwart Alex Light had the desired effect after half-time with Hillies finally finding their rhythm and producing consistent rugby to overrun a courageous Blacktown side 38 points to 19. Burzin Mehta and Ben Bates formed an electric combination on the flank while Dan Casa added two more tries to an imposing 2009 tally which currently stands at 29.

The win sets up a Grand Final blockbuster against the Merrylands Wolves at Granville this weekend. With the sides separated by a last second penalty just a fortnight ago, it promises to be a match-up fitting of a 1st Grade Grand Final.
