25/04/2009 Hunters Hill Still Unbeaten

Hunters Hill Rugby Club continued their unbeaten run in First Grade in last weekend's Anzac Day Suburban rugby action withstanding a fast-finishing Balmain to record a nail-biting 26-25 victory.

Unfazed by 4 key injuries during the week, Hillies started strongly with lock Jordan Butler capitalising on a fractured defence to power over early for the first try. The Hunters backline seemed in a mood to attack with the imposing 19 year-old La La Havea combining beautifully in the centres with New Zealand product Sam Henry to register further tries to winger James Hammond and the hard running fullback Matt Lane. The half-time whistle paused proceedings at 19-5.

The second half would prove tougher for the black and whites, with Balmain gaining momentum with a flow of possession and penalties. Hillies fought desperately to hold their lead with towering lock Dean Thompson totally dominating the lineout, severely compromising Balmain's attacking options. Fly-half Bruce Purcell held firm in his first grade debut and a further try to the Matt Lane would prove just enough to hold out for a one point win.

In a game that fell not only on Anzac Day but also commemorated the life of team-mate Paul "Paddy" Roberts who tragically passed away in the off season, it was a emotional result.

In the lower grades, despite the efforts of strongman prop Cam Van Oirschot, the Seconds fell to their first loss of the season going down in an entertaining match 22-25. In Third grade Hunters Hill were clinical in a 32-3 performance with flanker Liam Finnane everywhere. They remain unbeaten. Fourth grade, inspired by a Dan Casa hat-trick, came back superbly to win at the death registering a 26-20 win. Three weeks into the season, Casa has already crossed nine times. In the fifths, Balmain were simply too good triumphing 31-0.

Hunters Hill look to continue their resurgence away this weekend against Merrylands in a top of the table clash.
