Hunters Hill Rugby Club's First Grade side returned to the winners circle at the weekend with a 55 points to 10 mauling of Hawkesbury Valley at Boronia Park.
With the club’s Ladies Day in full swing on the sideline, the side reaffirmed the status as a genuine finals prospect in a powerful nine try display. Dean Thomson was again colossal in the line-out and ubiquitous around the paddock as a smaller but fitter Hillies pack allowed their backline to run rampant. Live-wire winger Burzin Mehta had a first grade debut to remember bagging a hat-trick of 5-pointers while fellow Joe-boy Ben Bates terrorised the other flank. Club stalwart Alex Light produced a masterful attacking performance at No.8 in his 101st first grade match as Hillies picked up a bonus point to leave them third on the first grade table.
The win capped off an excellent performance earlier in the day the lower grades. For the second consecutive week, the Seconds pulled the game out of the fire at the death to win 18-17 with the calm head of Andre Thomas crucial to the win. Tim Vertoudakis’ Thirds remained undefeated in another dominant performance blanking the boys from the Valley 29-0. The reigning Premiers Fourths cantered to their 20th consecutive victory in a 26-12 win with mercurial skipper and co-coach Richie Colley snaring a hat-trick before half-time. In 5th grade Hunters Hill suffered their only defeat of the day going down to a strong Mosman side.
The fantastic overall result leaves Hunters Hill with a clear 54 point lead in the Club Championship, a lead they will seek to extend this weekend against Brothers at Roseville.
