Hunters Hill Rugby 1st Grade side demonstrated that they have the necessary fire-power to be a force in this year’s suburban rugby finals with a solid 45-25 victory over UWS Hawkesbury at Richmond at the weekend.
Although an indifferent start would invite the large UWSH pack into the contest, Hunters Hill’s attacking potency on the flank would ensure that they kept in touch with an aggressive home-side. A first-half scuffle that led to the yellow carding of two players as well as the red-carding of a UWSH player would end up having huge bearing on the game.
Fly-half maestro Dave Marshall would ensure that the black and whites would capitalise on the extra man, supplying his backline with a steady supply of ball that would translate into a steady supply of points.
To their credit, UWSH’s 14 men were superb in defeat, their efforts earning 4 tries and contributing to a match high both on points and entertainment value.
The win guarantees the Boronia-based club a top-two finish as well as a place in the major semi-final of 2009. With two fixtures remaining in the regular season, the side needs to maintain momentum this weekend as they travel to Blacktown.
In the other games, Second Grade maintained first position of the ladder with a 24-7 victory. Third Grade are still unbeaten with a spiteful 31-0 win and Fourth Grade had a week to forget, going down in a 24-15 boil-over.
