ON HONOUR CAPS

An Honour Cap is awarded the by the Hunters Hill Rugby Union Football Club for significant and long-term on-field contribution. Awardees have often been Club Captains, have played for at least a decade, have represented Hunters Hill as a NSW Suburban Rugby Rep and most importantly, are deemed to be of good character by their peers. Unfortunately, due to the 1973 fire, the early Honour Caps have little information provided: HT Bower, WC Howard (1909), CA Fairland , JC Redshaw (1910), E Craine, W Weir (1911), GM Cuneo, LJ Rinaldi (1913).

Anthony Brunsdon*

Honour Cap awarded 1977
Life Member #11 awarded 1980

Tony’s association began in 1962 in the Under 18s, being one of the first of “The Balmain Boys” to join the Club. He was an engaging and likeable man and capable footballer. His manner naturally drew people to his company and friendship. He immersed himself in Club activities, on and off the field.
He was instrumental in persuading former Wallaby John Francis to join the Club as Head Coach in 1971. As well as playing, he became involved with coaching, picking up tips and styles from John Francis, enabling the continuation of the more structured and disciplined approach that Hunters Hill became famous for in the 1970’s and 80’s.
Tony’s personality and friendship was also a factor in the Club’s strong links with Petersham, recognised in the annual “Brunno Cup” played between the Clubs. One of Tony’s personal highlights was coaching his two sons, Stewart and Chris, who played with the Club. He was a passionate and loyal Clubman to the end.

John White

Honour Cap awarded 1977
Life Member #12 awarded 1981

John started his career at the Club in 1963 with Michael Moss and others from the Balmain area through association with Bruce Lycett and Tony Brunsdon. All became lifelong friends along with Ron Fitzgerald, Terry Rust and Paul Ivory from the Gladesville area and later Terry Laundry and Brian Robertson.
John was a pugnacious halfback who had that vital halfback trait of “talking”. He was never lost for a word either on or off the field. 1963 was also the start of John’s representative career being selected in Eastwood District U18’s. John was the Club’s first NSW Suburban Representative with the peak of John’s career during the “new era” of the Club in the late 60’s/early 70’s. John benefited greatly from the elevation of coaching standards and administration at the Club delivered by John Francis and Morrie Willcoxson – they were valuable mentor’s to him.
John is one of the very few to play over 500 games for the Club. Not to be content with that, he also coached and managed teams. Whilst doing his bit on the field he also did far more than his share off the field in Committee and other roles. In 2013 he joined son Ron on The Archives Committee.

Allan Southcombe*

Honour Cap awarded 1981
Life Membership #15 awarded 1988

It was impossible for Allan to not be involved with the Club having grown up directly opposite Boronia No 1. He joined the juniors in 1961 and progressed through to the seniors in the early 1970’s. His style was characteristic of a cheeky half back. Whether you were beside him on the park as a player, receiving his words of wisdom as a coach, watching him referee, or in a Committee meeting, you knew precisely what he thought and where you stood.
Southy was not afraid to step in and help the Club in whatever role was needed. Allan epitomised passion for the Club.

Brian Robertson

Honour Cap awarded 1983
Life Member #28 awarded 2010

Brian’s father played rugby for the Club and Brian started with the juniors in 1960. He had his first game in the seniors in 1969, being called up from the Under 18’s in the latter part of the 1969 season and had the privilege of playing in that year’s Whiddon Cup premiership. Brian played through until 1983.
Brian took on the role of Club Secretary in the early 1970’s and was part of a strong administration that complemented and contributed to a more disciplined and successful playing group. He was very engaged in the Club’s first attempts to obtain a clubhouse and he redrafted the Club’s constitution.
Brian was a Committee member then Chairperson of NSW Sub Districts, which helped rebuild the Club’s profile and position to emerge as one of the powerhouses of NSW Suburban Rugby, which continued for several decades. Brain has the distinction of having a NSW Suburban Competition Cup named in his honour, the Robertson Cup.
He chaired the Club’s Centenary Committee in 1992, help establish and worked on The Archives Committee and the recording of our first 125 years. Brian has served on the Club’s Board, including as President.

Grant Millard

Honour Cap awarded 1985
Life Member #19 awarded 1994

Grant is a local who like many other Life Members started playing in the Juniors and progressed through the Seniors to the Cats. Grant as a second rower played well above his weight. If there was someone on the bottom of the ruck ferreting out the ball it was likely to be Grant.
Whilst he had lots of wins under his belt it was not about winning but “putting in” that was important to him. He played in excess of 300 games and proudly represented the Club for 3 years for NSW Suburban Rugby. Towards the end of his playing career he took to coaching and was a premiership winner. Grant was always someone who made his presence felt whether it was on the field or off and had an influence on others around him. It is no coincidence that he was part of the higher-grade teams in the golden era of the Club in the 70’s and 80’s.

David Head

Honour Cap awarded 1985
Life Member #34 awarded 2017

David’s involvement started as a player in the Juniors. His first season in 1968 as a player was soon followed by Junior coaching roles in the early 70’s. His desire to coach came out at an early age and continued right through his playing career culminating in him being Club coach in 1989. David was an integral part of the golden era of the Club in the 70’s and 80’s. He brought athleticism and a considered strategic approach to the game as an inside back. This was further recognised by his representative selection.

David’s contribution to the Club was not just on the field but he also served on the Committee of the Club and as a delegate to Suburban Rugby to put our Club’s views forward in the most positive way but also for the betterment of the game overall.

David Polly

Honour Cap awarded in 1985
Life Member #21 awarded in 1998.

Dave like his dad Ted was never known to waste his words. When one reviews the statistics of Dave’s involvement in the Club one can see that his record does all of the talking. 500+ Games played, highest all time try scorer, premierships, coaching roles, representative honours including NSW Suburban Rugby Player of the Year etc etc.
If Dave wasn’t the best player that ever pulled on a black and white hooped jumper then we can share a beer to discuss who was better. Notwithstanding all of the above, Dave has continued to “do his bit” around Boronia so that everyone else can continue to enjoy their rugby at Hunters Hill.

Michael McNamara

Honour Cap awarded 1986
Life Member #18 awarded 1994

Like most Life Members, Michael is a local and has been involved in the Club for most of his life, in this case, in excess of 60 years. He’s played in each of the Juniors, Seniors and Cats winning more than his fair share of premierships and having played more than 400 grade games. Michael, both during and after his playing career has also coached and managed many teams.
He has contributed in many Committee roles starting in 1986 and still going strong. One of his most cherished roles has been as a foundation member and treasurer of the Cats. Together with Gary Lane and Peter McFarlane, they have been the mainstays in creating and developing the CATS into the significant part of the Club that it is today. Gary Lane

Honour Cap awarded 1987
Life Member #24 awarded 2002

Gary was the impetus behind the creation of the hugely successful CATS shortly after our Centenary year. He was inaugural Chairman and has held that role ever since, unanimously re-elected each year. However, we get ahead of ourselves.
Gary is a local who started with the Club in the Juniors in the 60’s, progressed onto the Seniors and ultimately the CATS. His playing career was stellar having played more games than most. His second most significant role however was as Chairman of the Seniors for 5 years in which he took the club back to the first division of NSW Suburban Rugby.
Leaving aside that Gary was Chairman of both the Seniors and CATS at the same time, it is the CATS which is arguably Gary’s most significant contribution to the Club. The CATS play a game every so often but it’s real benefit to the Club is as a supporter’s group to the playing members of the Club. It is open to all and represents the essence of camaraderie that we hold dear. Gary was the instigator and has seen it prosper. Thank you Gary.

Seniors Chairman: 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018.

Andrew Mostyn
Honour Cap awarded 1988
Life Member #35 awarded 2019

Andrew started with the Club as a Junior and progressed to the Senior Club in 1979. The early signs of an exciting young player were soon confirmed and reinforced as Andy became one of the most capped Kentwell Cup players in the golden era of the Club in the 70’s and 80’s. His name fills the record books for Best and Fairest awards and NSW Suburban Representative playing honours. Andy is an Honour Cap recipient.

Notwithstanding his contribution on the field, he held many Committee positions over the years culminating in the Club Presidency in 1996 and 1997.

However probably Andy’s biggest contribution was his work with Ian Kellaway to re-establish the Junior Club in the 1990’s. It was the third largest Junior Rugby Club in Australia. This was a hugely significant achievement at the time but more so for the foundation that it has set for the entire Club to build on since.

One of Andy’s proudest achievements in the Club was to play alongside his son Cameron in the winning 2005 Nicholson team. There is no known precedence for a father/son competition win like this!

The “Andrew Mostyn” Shield is awarded to the best performing, competitive team in the regular season of the junior AND senior clubs combined.

Andy Johnson
Current Player

Honour Cap awarded 2015

Andy is everyone’s favourite teammate. He’s the guy you want to have a drink with, and the guy who gets the biggest team celebration for a try.

Andy is a real pleasure to scrum behind, and he earned his nickname of Uluru fairly. After playing 9 straight first grade seasons in the 2000’s, his Farnhamesque comebacks to 1st Grade always made the coaches happy.

Recently, it has not been unusual to see Andy coach & play 4th grade, and then bench 3’s, 2’s and 1’s for the rest of the day.

Alex Light
Current Player

Honour Cap awarded 2015

Lighty led the team from the front in all aspects of the game, a rock in defence, he could also single-handedly get Cats Corner jumping up and down with his attacking plays. One particular try - from 30 out, in front of Cats Corner, to win the 2009 Brunno Cup, is still vivid in the memory.

One only has to look at the fact that Alex achieved Player’s Player in 1st, 2nd and 3rd Grades to get a feel on what his teammates felt playing with Lighty.

Russell Kershler

Honour Cap awarded 2017
Life Member #26 awarded 2005

Russell’s contribution to the Club was immediate upon joining. Russell brought with him a hard edge developed whilst playing grade for Drummoyne. It was an attitude of “take no prisoners” and support of fellow team mates on the field. This was new to Subbies rugby and as it spread through the Senior ranks was a major contributor to the tremendous success of the Club in the 70’s and 80’s.

Russell also brought a technical aspect to the Subbies game. His focus on scrums and lineouts and in particular the skill of jumping at No. 2 were exemplary.

Long after his playing days were over, Russell has remained involved in developing younger players and taking on coaching roles. He is seen as the wiseman on CAT Hill at Boronia Park. Russell has also often taken on mentoring roles for new or younger members of the committee.

His most important role however was the Presidency of the Club and providing the important financial stabilisation required at that time.

Jordan Butler

Honour Cap awarded 2017

Jordan came to Hunters Hill as a skinny country kid whose normal Saturday involved a try, a fight and a card. Nicknamed Seagull, he never really got over playing fullback as a kid, and could often be found much wider than his 2nd Row status entitled him.

He picked up the committee roles that no-one else wanted, and as a member of 1st grade for 11 seasons, would still be at the ground early to back up for every grade possible.

Julian Arndt
Current Player

Honour Cap awarded 2018

Jules was always the most erudite player on the field, which made him both a bane and saviour for the referees. His ref-whispering was most notable in those moments where his team (who always seemed to include some real pests) had stuffed up, often turning these into our advantage.

His cool headed approach to rugby included being one of the hardest workers on the paddock, all the while keeping the game’s strategy at front of mind. Jules’ lineout throwing was the stuff of dreams, while somehow seeming to find himself in the bottom of every breakdown.

Off the field, Jules was a real mentor for new & younger players, and he showed the standard for future Club Captains in getting involved.

Steven Morton
Current Player

Honour Cap awarded 2020

Morty is one of the players who understands that Rugby is as much a team environment away from the field as on it.

Arriving at Hunters Hill as a Hooker, he quickly realised he could lay claim to #8, and has hardly moved from there since. Notable for his ball-running and aggression in contact, he has grown into his leadership role, being 1st Grade captain for 2019 & 2020.

Steven’s impact on the field is shown by the fact that he is one of only four players to have received the 1st Grade B&F twice or more, and having taken this out three times, is second only to Andrew Mostyn (4).

Chris Atkins
Honour Cap awarded 2020

Chris has had a central role and ongoing commitment to Coaching the HH Women’s team to great success (Div. 2 Club Champions in 2019, runner up in 2020). He is a well respected and much loved member of the club across Seniors, Women’s, Juniors, and Golden Oldies. It would be hard to find anyone in the club who has had such involvement in all arms of the club.

Axe’s impact on the field at Hunters is shown by the fact that he is one of only four players to have received the 1st Grade B&F twice or more. Away from Hunter’s Hill, Axe has also played for for Otago, West Harbour, Randwick & 7’s for NSW.
