ON LIFE MEMBERSHIP

Life Membership is the single highest honour awarded by the Hunters Hill Rugby Union Football Club. Awardees stand out in their contribution to the Club on and off the field.

Please read the stories and achievements of the Life Members. You will see powerful stories. Stories of people who have started with the Club as junior players or else had their first involvement when they brought their children along to play. Most are still involved in the Club today, some for as long as 60 years.

Along the way they have mostly played. Many have coached or managed teams. All have taken on Committee roles. There are many instances of mentorship and no coincidence in the fact that many are long life friends.

However, their contributions have not always focused solely on the Club, many have gone onto to spread the Hunters Hill story to the wider rugby community. The Club has been well represented as office bearers, coaches and selectors in Sydney and NSW Junior Rugby, NSW Suburban Rugby and indeed NSW Rugby itself. Many Life Members have also refereed and taken on roles in referee administration.

The significance of the contribution to NSW Suburban Rugby is in no small part reflected by three of our Life Members having competitions named after them; the Farrant, Robertson and Cowboy Cups.

Our life Members love their rugby and have always done their best for the Club. Our proud and ancient Club owes them a debt of gratitude.

Rex Shapter - Coach of the 1964 U11’s.

Rex Shapter*

Life Member #5 awarded 1960’s

The background to Rex’s involvement is not well known. Rex and Eric Robson were pretty much a team and together coached and managed junior teams in the early to mid 1960’s, including the 1966 U'16 Tour of Tasmania. Rex along side Eric Robson was a tireless worker for the Club and ran raffles at the Hunters Hill Hotel every Friday night to raise money for the Club.

Ross Harrod*

Life Member #6 awarded 1973

Ross was the club man from central casting.  He lived and breathed the Club, there didn’t seem to be a day in which he wasn’t at Boronia Park getting things done.  His particular passion was for Junior rugby.  This was so valuable at the time, the Senior Club was less than strong, it was the Juniors that kept the Club alive. It was those Juniors who became the excellent players who were at the centre of the Club’s tremendous success in the 1970’s and 80’s.
Ross provided very significant financial support to the Club and made sure that the Club had the essential equipment each season.
Ross was a quietly spoken man with a kind and encouraging word for all. His role as a mentor was rarely spoken of but he was instrumental in bringing Mike Moss and Don Farrant into the Club’s Committee, two wonderful contributors to the Club who in themselves went on to receive Life Memberships.  A great Club builder. Our gratitude runs deep.

Roles
Vice President: 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974.
Secretary: 1975,1976.
Historian: 1977.

Team Manager
U18’s: 1971

Honours & Stats
Playing years include the 1930’s.

Don Farrant*

Life Member #7 awarded 1973

Don first came to the Club in 1960. The club at that stage had probably only six teams ranging from U10’s to U21’s. The Junior Club grew steadily under his guidance and strong organisational skills. He organised the first Junior touring teams to Tasmania and Western Australia.
A long time supporter of sub-district rugby, Don Farrant presented the Farrant Cup to the MSDRU in 1974. Initially included in an expanded fourth division, it later became the award for the Division Three second grade premiership.
Don was also a member of the NSW Referees Appointments Board.

Roles
President 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967

Honours & Stats
Mayor of Hunters Hill Council for period 1969-74

Michael Moss

Life Member #8 awarded 1974

The Whiddon Cup winning team of 1969 is often referred to as the start of the re-invigoration of senior rugby at the Club. As Mike was part of that team, it is little wonder that it was a success. Keeping good company, Mike was part of the Balmain connection who came to the Club with Lycett, Brunsdon and White.
To drop a few more names, Mike (and Don Farrant) was also instrumental in getting the legendary coach John Francis and President Morrie Wilcoxson to the Club in the 70’s. Mike has always attributed the success of the Club to John’s elevation of the playing ethos and Morrie’s focus on the administration.
Mike would not put himself forward as a great player but rather as someone who made things happen. His coaching in thirds and fourths in the 70’s and 80’s is a case in point. When needed, Mike stepped forward to fulfil these roles and won premierships along the way. Mike took it upon himself in 1978 to ensure that the rich history of the Club was recorded and safe guarded. He continued with this passion until 1994. Those now and before us are grateful for this effort.

Aub Bennett*

Life Member #9 awarded 1976

In 1969 Aub’s eldest son Robert started playing in Hunters Hill U18 and Aub found his calling in life. For the next 25 years he attended Hunters Hill rugby matches all over Sydney. Aub would be the first person to the oval on Saturday mornings by 10.30 and sit on the sidelines for 4 matches up to 4.30pm proving first aid, water, oranges and all other required items. His enthusiasm and friendship to all the many players who played during this time was not to be matched.

Bruce “Angry” Lycett*
Life Member #10 awarded 1979

Bruce "Angry" Lycett was a giant of a man in a back's body who was always the voice of reason and the champion of proper Rugby etiquette.
Angry took on the role of getting to know new players at the club, and welcoming both them and their families.
Angry played an integral role in both the Seniors and the Juniors clubs and he continued fulfilling roles at the club and playing a mentoring role for many players and junior committee members right up until his death in 2014.

Anthony Brunsdon*

Life Member #11 awarded 1980
Honour Cap awarded 1977

Tony’s association began in 1962 in the Under 18s, being one of the first of “The Balmain Boys” to join the Club. He was an engaging and likeable man and capable footballer. His manner naturally drew people to his company and friendship. He immersed himself in Club activities, on and off the field.
He was instrumental in persuading former Wallaby John Francis to join the Club as Head Coach in 1971. As well as playing, he became involved with coaching, picking up tips and styles from John Francis, enabling the continuation of the more structured and disciplined approach that Hunters Hill became famous for in the 1970’s and 80’s.
Tony’s personality and friendship was also a factor in the Club’s strong links with Petersham, recognised in the annual “Brunno Cup” played between the Clubs. One of Tony’s personal highlights was coaching his two sons, Stewart and Chris, who played with the Club. He was a passionate and loyal Clubman to the end.

Roles

John White

Life Member #12 awarded 1981
Honour Cap awarded 1977

John started his career at the Club in 1963 with Michael Moss and others from the Balmain area through association with Bruce Lycett and Tony Brunsdon. All became lifelong friends along with Ron Fitzgerald, Terry Rust and Paul Ivory from the Gladesville area and later Terry Laundry and Brian Robertson.
John was a pugnacious halfback who had that vital halfback trait of “talking”. He was never lost for a word either on or off the field. 1963 was also the start of John’s representative career being selected in Eastwood District U18’s. John was the Club’s first NSW Suburban Representative with the peak of John’s career during the “new era” of the Club in the late 60’s/early 70’s. John benefited greatly from the elevation of coaching standards and administration at the Club delivered by John Francis and Morrie Willcoxson – they were valuable mentor’s to him.
John is the first to play over 500 games for the Club. Not to be content with that, he also coached and managed teams. Whilst doing his bit on the field he also did far more than his share off the field in Committee and other roles. He managed to play a few games with son Ron in the mid 90’s before retiring age 52. In 2013 he joined son Ron on The Archives Committee.

Morrie Willcoxson

Life Member #13 awarded in 1981

Morrie joined the Club at an important time in its growth and development, having held senior roles with Eastwood rugby. He brought sound administrative and organisation skills to support an already successful on field coaching team. He also provided a strong mentoring role to a number of players, who progressively assumed senior administrative roles in the Club.
Morrie gave the Club common direction and control that fitted comfortably with both coaches and players. Whilst a generation older than most in the club, with his gentle manner and convivial nature he became a much loved and respected elder of the Club.

Roles
President: 1972 to 1980

Derek MacRae

Life Member #14 awarded in 1984

Derek was a significant part of the re-emergence of the Club in 70’s and continued on into the golden years in the 80’s. He (like many others) have been rightly proud to be part of the undefeated 1977 Kentwell Cup Premiership winning side!
Derek was a tenacious player who seemed to be everywhere on the field. He was very active in the 80’s in Committee roles, even bringing his wife Ruth on board as a Committee member for several years. The family commitment didn’t stop there with Derek also encouraging his two sons to play. Both are still involved, with Matt going onto a coach and winning a Premiership to boot.
Derek has strong views on how the game should be played and is passionate about his rugby. Derek is always at the “Field of Dreams” supporting vociferously from Cat Corner, rain hail or shine.

Allan Southcombe*

Life Member #15 awarded 1988
Honour Cap awarded 1981

It was impossible for Allan to not be involved with the Club having grown up directly opposite Boronia No 1. He joined the juniors in 1961 and progressed through to the seniors in the early 1970’s. His style was characteristic of a cheeky half back. Whether you were beside him on the park as a player, receiving his words of wisdom as a coach, watching him referee, or in a Committee meeting, you knew precisely what he thought and where you stood.
Southy was not afraid to step in and help the Club in whatever role was needed. Allan epitomised passion for the Club.

Terry Laundry

Life Member #17 awarded 1991

After playing his Junior football with Drummoyne, Terry was encouraged to join Hunters Hill in 1967. He had played against Hunters Hill in the Under 21 Competition and had fortuitously become friends with some of the Hunters Hill players, including Terry Rust, Ray Bortolussi, Ray Hickman and Peter Wincote. His association with these friends was to change his ‘life’.
He joined Hunters Hill as the Club started to head into its glory years – winning the Whiddon, Barraclough and Kentwell Cups from 1969 to 1972. In 1974 he headed to Port Moresby, PNG for work commitments. Upon his return he continued playing with Hunters Hill before retiring from competition football in 1979 – being the Captain of the first Hunters Hill team to win a Judd Cup competition.
After a break of a few years, completing a Bachelor of Business Degree, Terry became involved with the Club once again filling roles as Treasurer and Secretary for many years. He played in many Golden Oldies Rugby tournaments before his wife said “ENOUGH”. He helped establish and worked on The Archive Committee and assisting with the recording of the Club’s first 125 years.

Michael McNamara

Life Member #18 awarded 1994
Honour Cap awarded 1986

Like most Life Members, Michael is a local and has been involved in the Club for most of his life, in this case, in excess of 60 years. He’s played in each of the Juniors, Seniors and Cats winning more than his fair share of premierships and having played more than 400 grade games. Michael, both during and after his playing career has also coached and managed many teams.
He has contributed in many Committee roles starting in 1986 and still going strong. One of his most cherished roles has been as a foundation member and treasurer of the Cats. Together with Gary Lane and Peter McFarlane, they have been the mainstays in creating and developing the CATS into the significant part of the Club that it is today. The CATS represent the bringing together of all that is great about the Club in support of both the Senior and Junior Clubs as “One Club”.

Roles

Grant Millard

Life Member #19 awarded 1994
Honour Cap awarded 1985

Grant is a local who like many other Life Members started playing in the Juniors and progressed through the Seniors to the Cats. Grant as a second rower played well above his weight. If there was someone on the bottom of the ruck ferreting out the ball it was likely to be Grant.
Whilst he had lots of wins under his belt it was not about winning but “putting in” that was important to him. He played in excess of 300 games and proudly represented the Club for 3 years for NSW Suburban Rugby. Towards the end of his playing career he took to coaching and was a premiership winner. Grant was always someone who made his presence felt whether it was on the field or off and had an influence on others around him. It is no coincidence that he was part of the higher-grade teams in the golden era of the Club in the 70’s and 80’s.

Roles

Ian Ross

Life Member #20 awarded 1995
NSWSRU Life Member awarded 2007.

Cowboy is larger than life, a force of nature. He came to the Club in the 70’s, won four premierships, was Club Captain for two years and President for five years. His forte was ideas and innovation. Cowboy was integral to the success of the Club in its golden years in the 70’s and 80’s. However, he also went on to make a significant contribution in NSW Suburban Rugby as a Committee member for 7 years and Chairman for 15 years. He was given the ultimate accolade of having a NSW Suburban Competition named in his honour in 2010, the Cowboy Cup, for the best performing club across all divisions. Not to be content with Rugby administration at this level, Cowboy went onto a Directorship of NSW Rugby for a further 12 years in which he was also the Rugby Australia delegate. With this level of commitment and dedication it is little wonder that Hunters Hill Rugby is held in such high esteem across our sport.

David Polly

Life Member #21 awarded in 1998.
Honour Cap awarded in 1985

Dave like his dad Ted was never known to waste his words. When one reviews the statistics of Dave’s involvement in the Club one can see that his record does all of the talking. 500+ Games played, highest all time try scorer, premierships, coaching roles, representative honours including NSW Suburban Rugby Player of the Year etc etc.
If Dave wasn’t the best player that ever pulled on a black and white hooped jumper then we can share a beer to discuss who was better. Notwithstanding all of the above, Dave has continued to “do his bit” around Boronia so that everyone else can continue to enjoy their rugby at Hunters Hill.

Phill Shaw

Life Member #22 awarded 2000.

Phill played in excess of 500 games for the Club. What a stunning statistic. Over decades he inspired the lower grade players in the Club to bigger and better things and won Judd and Nicholson competitions for good measure.
Not content with playing more games than most, Phill then turned his skills to team management. Never were the Club’s teams better managed than during Phill’s involvement. As if that wasn’t enough, Phill moved onto coaching. His name adorns the list of coaches in 4 grades culminating in him being Club Coach in 2010.
Phill is the true Clubman, when he was needed, whether it was on the pitch, managing teams or indeed coaching them, Phill was always ready to put himself forward.

Ray Bortolussi*

Life Member #23 awarded 2002

Affectionally known as ‘Lucy’, Ray was a big man who played second row in the 1960-1970 eras until a bad back forced his retirement. He was the epitome of a great club man – filling several roles during his 40 years association with the Club.
After retiring from football he continued to support the Club by recruiting players – most notably was talented New Zealander Kevin Carmichael, helping out as an unbiased linesman and coaching and managing teams. He provided guidance and counselling for Juniors joining the Seniors. Ray’s input was such as to see the Clubman of the Year trophy named after him.

Gary Lane

Life Member #24 awarded 2002
Honour Cap awarded 1987

Gary was the impetus behind the creation of the hugely successful CATS shortly after our Centenary year. He was inaugural Chairman and has held that role ever since, unanimously re-elected each year. However, we get ahead of ourselves.
Gary is a local who started with the Club in the Juniors in the 60’s, progressed onto the Seniors and ultimately the CATS. His playing career was stellar having played more games than most. His second most significant role however was as Chairman of the Seniors for 5 years in which he took the club back to the first division of NSW Suburban Rugby.
Leaving aside that Gary was Chairman of both the Seniors and CATS at the same time, it is the CATS which is arguably Gary’s most significant contribution to the Club. The CATS play a game every so often but it’s real benefit to the Club is as a supporter’s group to the playing members of the Club. It is open to all and represents the essence of camaraderie that we hold dear. Gary was the instigator and has seen it prosper. Thank you Gary.

Doug Piper

Life Member #25 awarded 2003

Doug joined the Club following a successful grade career with Drummoyne. His playing credits at Hunters Hill were admirable, his three years coaching Judd Cup are to be remembered as is his role on Committee.
However, his real contributions came in two ways – team management and Club promotion. Doug was for five consecutive years the first grade team manager and also manager of the NSW Suburban Colts team. Back when the internet was a something most people were just getting their minds around, Doug built the Club’s website to be one of the first of any rugby club around the world. He went onto further develop and maintain it for 10 years. As a result, the Club profile was promoted to the highest level, not to mention that the Club family was always fully informed.
Doug was awarded the Sport Medal of Australia in 2000, the year of the Sydney Olympics.

Russell Kershler

Life Member #26 awarded 2005
Honour Cap awarded 2017

Russell’s contribution to the Club was immediate upon joining. Russell brought with him a hard edge developed whilst playing grade for Drummoyne. It was an attitude of “take no prisoners” and support of fellow team mates on the field. This was new to Subbies rugby and as it spread through the Senior ranks was a major contributor to the tremendous success of the Club in the 70’s and 80’s.

Russell also brought a technical aspect to the Subbies game. His focus on scrums and lineouts and in particular the skill of jumping at No. 2 were exemplary.

Long after his playing days were over, Russell has remained involved in developing younger players and taking on coaching roles. He is seen as the wiseman on CAT Hill at Boronia Park. Russell has also often taken on mentoring roles for new or younger members of the committee.

His most important role however was the Presidency of the Club and providing the important financial stabilisation required at that time.

Ian Kellaway

Life Member #27 awarded 2010

Ian has given to the Club on so many levels whether as a referee, a coach, a Committee member or having fathered some very talented rugby sons!
In 1998 he and Andrew Mostyn had been discussing a merger of Lane Cove Juniors to re-establish Hunters Hill Junior Rugby Club with the end result being Lane Cove backed down and so Ian in frustration left Lane Cove and joined the newly formed Hunters Hill Juniors. The rest is history as they say with the Juniors having gone on to be one of the strongest junior clubs in NSW.
Ian was also instrumental in the Development of a new Constitution in 2009 including the creation of a Board of Management for the entire club. When wise counsel is sought, Ian is our “go to” man. There is nothing Ian Kellaway would not do for the club. Lane Cove’s loss was Hunters Hill’s gain!

Brian Robertson

Life Member #28 awarded 2010
Honour Cap awarded 1983

Brian’s father played rugby for the Club and Brian started with the juniors in 1960. He had his first game in the seniors in 1969, being called up from the Under 18’s in the latter part of the 1969 season and had the privilege of playing in that year’s Whiddon Cup premiership. Brian played through until 1983.
Brian took on the role of Club Secretary in the early 1970’s and was part of a strong administration that complemented and contributed to a more disciplined and successful playing group. He was very engaged in the Club’s first attempts to obtain a clubhouse and he redrafted the Club’s constitution.
Brian was a Committee member then Chairperson of NSW Sub Districts, which helped rebuild the Club’s profile and position to emerge as one of the powerhouses of NSW Suburban Rugby, which continued for several decades. Brain has the distinction of having a NSW Suburban Competition Cup named in his honour, the Robertson Cup.
He chaired the Club’s Centenary Committee in 1992, help establish and worked on The Archives Committee and the recording of our first 125 years. Brian has served on the Club’s Board, including as President.

Peter McFarlane

Life Member #29 awarded 2013

Pete joined the Club in 1985 and it was not long until he made his mark by joining the Committee and being awarded Clubman of the year twice. This commitment has continued unabated ever since.
Pete brought his son along to the Juniors in 2007 and as you would expect, coached the teams for 5 years. This time in the Juniors together with his playing days in the Seniors and Cats ignited his passion for “One Club” at Hunters Hill. This passion is at the core of everything he does.
Cats will know Pete for his long serving role on the Committee of the Cats. There is no coincidence in Pete’s involvement and the tremendous success of the Cats. Pete believes that the Cats contribution and engagement was critical to us creating a club for all ages.
Pete hides his light under a bushel. Not as obvious is his deeper strategic thinking about the big issues that affect the future of the Club. Thinking is one thing but Pete then goes about making it happen. The work he has done on the “Field of Dreams” via the 2020 Plan of Management with Hunters Hill Council and the early planning for the Boronia Park Community Facility are key examples of what he has achieved……without any fanfare.

Andrew Ball

Life Member #30 awarded 2013

Bally epitomised the social side of Hunters Hill Rugby for two decades. Always ready to go on tour, if not tourist of the year he was always close. His input off-field culminated in the Bally Bar - which continued to be named so even after he stopped running it - running touch and water, and being arguably our most capped boat race participant.
On the field, Bally had a hard-nosed attitude, determined tackle and was a pest at the ruck, which often resulted coaches points and his team-mates respect. His style of play was such that many an opposition breathed a sigh of relief if he left the field for any reason.

Andrew Skelly recieves his Life Member jacket from Gordon Bray

Andrew Skelly

Life Member #31 awarded 2014

Andrew played his rugby with the Club in the 1980’s before bringing his sons along to the Junior Club in 2003. From there he really left his mark, Andrew not only coached Junior teams for many years but then joined the Juniors’ Committee to “put something back” to the Club that had given him and his family so much enjoyment. Further roles in coaching and administration at Gordon, Northern Suburbs and Sydney Juniors showed how committed he is to rugby.

It is no coincidence that Andrew’s membership of the Juniors Committee was at the time when the Junior Club was the third largest in Australia with over 500 members. Andrew was heavily influenced and supported by other Life Members such as Bruce Lycett, Gary Lane, & Ian Kellaway culminating in his Presidency of the Club.

Andrew has always been an enthusiastic contributor to whatever is needed at the Club whether it be “on the field” or social functions or just getting in and doing the things that need to be done, no matter how menial.

Paul Shields

Life Member #33 awarded 2016

Paul’s impact on the Club was immediate upon joining in 2004, so much so he was awarded Clubman of the Year in only his second year and has since been awarded it a further two times. This in itself tells what Paul is all about. He works tirelessly at training and on game day but also behind the scenes focusing on the detail of what needs to happen and rolling his sleeves up to get it done.
Like many other Life Members who have been instigators in strategic change at the Club, Paul’s name is very much associated with the growth of Women’s rugby. Just like the re-invigoration of the Juniors and the creation of the CATS in the 90’s, Women’s Rugby at the Club, will in future, be seen in the same transformational light. Paul, thank you for your vision and the work that inevitably goes on behind the scenes.

David Head

Life Member #34 awarded 2017
Honour Cap awarded 1985

David’s involvement like many of our Life Members started as a player in the Juniors. His first season in 1968 as a player was soon followed by Junior coaching roles in the early 70’s. His desire to coach came out at an early age and continued right through his playing career culminating in him being Club coach in 1989. David was an integral part of the golden era of the Club in the 70’s and 80’s. He brought athleticism and a considered strategic approach to the game as an inside back. This was further recognised by his representative selection.

David’s contribution to the Club was not just on the field but he also served on the Committee of the Club and as a delegate to Suburban Rugby to put our Club’s views forward in the most positive way but also for the betterment of the game overall.

Andrew Mostyn

Life Member #35 awarded 2019
Honour Cap awarded 1988

Andrew started with the Club as a Junior and progressed to the Senior Club in 1979. The early signs of an exciting young player were soon confirmed and reinforced as Andy became one of the most capped Kentwell Cup players in the golden era of the Club in the 70’s and 80’s. His name fills the record books for Best and Fairest awards and NSW Suburban Representative playing honours. Andy is an Honour Cap recipient.

Notwithstanding his contribution on the field, he held many Committee positions over the years culminating in the Club Presidency in 1996 and 1997.

However probably Andy’s biggest contribution was his work with Ian Kellaway to re-establish the Junior Club in the 1990’s. It was the third largest Junior Rugby Club in Australia. This was a hugely significant achievement at the time but more so for the foundation that it has set for the entire Club to build on since.

One of Andy’s proudest achievements in the Club was to play alongside his son Cameron in the winning 2005 Nicholson team. There is no known precedence for a father/son competition win like this!

The “Andrew Mostyn” Shield is awarded to the best performing, competitive team in the regular season of the junior AND senior clubs combined.

Bonnie Gregory

Life Member #37 awarded 2020

Bonnie joined the club in 2007 as a parent and along with a couple of other mothers took over the running of the Juniors Canteen in 2009. In 2011 Bonnie took over the Canteen Management role on her own and she continued the running of it till 2020 (many years after her children had stopped playing). The role of the Canteen was massive and such was its importance that over this period it grew to be the Junior club’s single biggest source of revenue. To have this role in Bonnie’s hands for over a decade is testament to her work.

Bonnie also joined the Juniors committee as Assistant Registrar in 2011 at a time when the junior club had over 500 registered players – and all the paperwork was manual. Bonnie also played for the club in the inaugural Ladies Monday night Touch Comp in 2013 alongside her daughter. Bonnie has been a fixture at Boronia Park for many years and typifies the spirit of our great club – it is fitting that she is also the first female Life Member.

Roles
Canteen Manager 2009 to 2020.
Juniors Asst. Registrar: 2011, 2012, 2013.

Honours & Stats
Bruce Lycett Award For Outstanding Service to the Junior Club: 2014 (shared with her husband Ben).

Ronnie White

1992 Stockdale Cup Premiers

Life Member #40 awarded 2022

Ronnie was born into Hunters Hill Rugby in 1973 when his father John White (Life Member #12) brought him along as a ball boy during the late 70’s to late 80’s and sideline assistant to Aub Bennett (Life Member #9), along with touring with the Golden Oldies to Europe in 1985.  Well, what an introduction that was.

Ronnie became a senior member as a player in the 1992 centenary year. In his first season, he was selected in the Presidents XV vs Combined Sub-District XV Centenary match, age 18 made his 1st grade debut, won a 2nd Grade Stockdale Cup premiership, was in the cast of the last of the famous HHRUFC review shows and awarded the club’s Best New Back award. From then he has won 4 premierships, with 3 times runners up, played in every senior grade in Sub-Districts top three divisions, played 7’s, been a coach, manager, administrator, and twice clubman of the year.

Ron’s particular interest in the history of the Club was demonstrated by him being a foundation member of the The Archive Committee (TAC) formed to document the Club’s wonderful past.  Also, he took it upon himself to gather the vital playing statistics of all Club members a role that he has stayed with “forever”.  The accuracy of this data has settled many a bar room debate.  Finally, Ron long ago took upon himself the thank less job of preparing the Club’s Annual Report, to document and preserve the annual snapshot of all things great about our Club.

Ronnie in his time with the club has nurtured a winning culture and a serious hard work attitude, which can only enhance the Club’s long and proud history in NSW Suburban Rugby.

Ron (2nd left kneeling) kicked a 45m penalty goal in the 1994 Blunt Cup 6-3 premiership win., age 20.

Ron (front 4th from right) kicked a sideline conversion in the 2008 Nicholson Cup 12-0 premiership win, age 34.

Life Member #41 awarded 2023

2006 U8’s White

2018 - U13’s HHJRUFC “Cerise”

2020 U21’s Colts - Robertson Cup

Rod became a member of HHRUFC in 2005 through the Juniors

There is a very strong argument that Rod has overseen the most successful age group in the junior club history. While titles won and semi-final placings may support that view, what is far more supportive is that from 2009 to 2014, the age group hosted more registered players, each of those years, than any other in the club’s history. In 2008 and 2010 the age group supported 4 teams the only times this has been achieved in regards to HHJRUFC association with SJRU competitions. Rod has continued into the Seniors as manager of the Colts team from 2018-2024.

 DUFFICY CUP    2007 - Current

The Dufficy Cup was and is an initiative at Rod’s suggestion, which addressed a need to prepare and smooth the transition of young players from U9 (Minis) to U10s and multiple changes that came with that. The initiative was equally targeting parents, to prepare them for changes and volunteering that would occur with the transition from minis to SJRU Junior Competitions. It is now one of the signature minis events in the SJRU calendar and is over-subscribed every year.

ARU COUNTRY CHALLENGE 2011-2013

HHJRUFC were approached by the ARU to support an initiative that would see city-based teams travel during school holidays to compete against junior country club teams. With Rod’s support HHJRUFC was one of the only Sydney based clubs who supported the ARU in this endeavour.

HHJRUFC “CERISE” 2015 – Current

The club was approached by St Joseph’s College to facilitate a team of “boarder” boys to play in SJRU competitions in 2012, Rod has supported this initiative each year by managing the under 13 team and has facilitated and supported this relationship

AFFILAITED UNIONS SERVICE - SJRU & NSWJRU  2015-2019

Rod managed a good number of Sydney Junior Rugby Union “Barbarian” U15 and U16 teams competing at the NSWJRU Zone Carnival during this time period. Rod then went on to manage a number of Sydney Juniors representative teams at the annual Sydney verse Country Carnival for U15, U16s & U18s.  Rod was known to have on a number of occasions paid fees and expenses for players who parents struggled with costs associated with selection in SJRU representative squads.

He worked closely with ARU and HHJRU in coaching junior primary school kids from all the local schools at tournaments for several years which resulted in a huge spike in Registrations for U9-U12 Age groups.
